Essay On Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill
Crew member onboard the Deepwater Horizon oil rig were awoken the morning of April 20, 2010 to the sound of multiple explosions. The Deepwater Horizon rig was positioned in the Gulf of Mexico about 40 miles off the coast of Louisiana. It was positioned about 5,000 feet above the seabed and the oil pipe extended another 18,000 feet into the rock below. It was owned and operated by Transocean and leased to BP. There were 127 crew men onboard the rig at the time of the explosion. The crew man began to evacuate the rig in lifeboats. The Coast Guard was summoned to come and assist. The fire was so intense that the Coast Guard could see if from 90 miles away. (F.2014) They could account for 115 of crew members, 17 of those men were injured and the remaining 11 men were presumed dead after multiple days of searching. People that had nothing to do with the decision that the company was making or the risk that they were in, paid the greatest cost. The men who died on the rig, the cleanup worker that are now dealing with long term health issues and the residents that were exposed to tons of chemicals. I don’t that they can every full compensate all the people and industries impacted by this spill. Money doesn’t bring back a loved one or your health. BP has tried to a wiggle their way out their mess as cheaply as possible. They are a profit driven company and has only done the bare minimum required to satisfy the government charges. BP recovered financially from the spill, while others will never
