Becoming More Culturally Competent There are many things we can do better as a community to become more culturally competent, especially when providing care to patients. There things we can do both organizationally (as a community) or individually. Creating programs for diversity health care leadership development and strengthening exercises (Betancourt, Green, &Carrillo, 2002). Businesses can hire and promote staff from diverse cultures (Betancourt et al., 2002). Involve community representatives in health care organization’s meetings (Betancourt et al., 2002). Having interpreter services available and developing health information for patients that is directed to language and cultural norms of specific cultural groups are also ways to become more culturally competent (Betancourt et al., 2002). Communities/organizations can also provide cross-cultural training as a better way of becoming more culturally competent (Betancourt et al., 2002).

It increases and improves the quality of care provided for all patients of all various culture groups (Betancourt et al., 2002). For businesses/organizations, it provides a way to respond to diverse patient groups and attract new patients as well (Betancourt et al., 2002). Providing culturally competent health care can remove any racial or any ethnic disparities that would affect the care patients receive (Betancourt et al., 2002). When we achieve cultural competence, we remove cultural barriers among patients that might affect the quality of care they receive.

There may be various definitions and ways to be cultural to be cultural competent. Although some of us may have cultural competence, there are still many ways we can improve to become more culturally competent.
