Eventually when the heart is no longer able to compensate heart failure occurs; congestion will then follow, resulting in insufficient supply of blood to the body.

    1. Heart failure (HF) is a syndrome that involves dysfunction of the cardiac muscle, it occurs with “any of disorders that damage or overwork the heart muscle” (Karch, 2017 p.751). Some of the disorders that may lead to HF are: coronary artery disease, cardiomyopathy, hypertension, and valvular heart disease (Karch, 2017). What ends up happening as a result of these disorders, is that the heart muscle cannot effectively pump blood throughout the vascular system (Karch, 2017). In left-sided heart failure, the “blood backs up into the lungs which leads to pulmonary vessel congestion and fluid leakage into the alveoli and lung tissue” (Karch, 2017 p.752). In right-sided failure, the blood backs up in the venous system, which may lead to liver congestion and edema of the legs and feet (Karch, 2017).…

A dog could also contract pneumothorax where the air escapes into the chest; or, the dog could also contract hemothorax where blood escapes into the chest cavity. About 25-40% cases show painful injuries to other parts of the body. With this condition, a dog will exhibit the following signs: troubled respiration, quick and light respiration, and an atypical breathing position. In order to properly see this condition, a veterinarian must take a chest radiograph, a CT scan, a thoracic or abdominal ultrasound, and/or a contrast radiography. When using these techniques, the veterinarian will be able to see where the stomach contents have moved into the chest cavity causing the lungs to be moved. Plus, they will be able to see where the diaphragmatic line and the cardia shadow has started to disappear. As soon as a dog is diagnosed with this condition, surgery needs to be performed before the stomach becomes filled with…

If their beloved pet is less stressed, owners will be, too, and will be more likely to come back for rechecks and yearly exams. Ryan Bragg, DVM, MS, Dipl, ACVECC, and others confirmed in a recent study (R.F. Bragg, et al. “Evaluation of the effects of hospital visit stress on physiologic variables in dogs.” JAVMA 2015, Vol 246, N 2, p. 212-215) that we “should consider stress from transportation and environmental change when canine patients have abnormalities of vital signs. “Specifically, he found significant differences in blood pressure, respiratory rate and pulse rate between home and hospital environments.…

Currently, the simplest method to counteract congestive heart failure is the use of medication. Medication can be effective if the heart is treated during the initial stages of the failure; however, if the heart is already in end stage congestive heart failure, medication is highly ineffective [Gorman and Park, 2001]. For people with a heart in the end stage of congestive heart failure, heart transplant surgery is the only biological alternative available. During heart transplant surgery, the diseased heart is removed and replaced with a healthy heart that was donated by a person who had died for other reasons. However, due to the relatively small number of donor hearts that become available each year, many people with end stage congestive heart failure die while waiting to receive a donated…

Heart disease can lead to congestive heart failure, a weakening of the heart that makes it impossible for it pump enough blood into the rest of the body. A surplus of fluid will then back up into a pet’s lungs and ultimately cause death. Congestive heart failure in dogs and cats has many causes and many symptoms. It can come on quickly in some cases or appear gradually over time.…

Shortness of breath or dyspnea and fatigue can be symptoms of a heart failure. This is because if the heart is not able to pump the oxygenated blood out to the rest of the body, the body will be low on oxygen and therefore have the need to breath heavy or feel light headed. Another sign can be chronic wheezing and edema or a build up of fluid. These are caused by the backup of the blood in the veins, which causes back up in body tissues. Because all body systems are no longer getting the oxygen needed, other systems are affected as well. The digestive system can be altered because of the decrease of blood flow, which can lead to symptoms of nausea or loss of appetite. A major symptom or sign of heart failure is rapid heart rate. This is due to the fact that the heart isn’t properly working so it tries to make up for itself. To get oxygenated blood out to the body, the heart will pump…
