Essay On Color Guard
A popular quote used by many guard members is that “Color Guard is god's gift to the marching band”. No matter your religion, the message of the quote is clear. Many guard members feel that the marching band needs them. Most band members would disagree with this, however, the color guard is superior to the band because the guard has to work harder, has more interesting equipment, and a better offseason activity than the marching band.
Wind and rain are environmental factor that mother nature never forgotten during the marching band season. However, when it comes to these weather problems the band has it easy. When it rains everyone is miserable, but there is a difference between being unhappy with the rain and being effected by it. It has already been shown that the band is not affected by the weather. The color guard, however, are very affected. The wind is the worst of them all. Just imagine, thoughing something that is 3 pounds in the air with wind speeds of 35mph or higher. What would happen? The weight would blow away. Well, the color guard has to do the same thing, however, they have to catched and stay in the same spot. The other environmental factor that affects the color guard is rain. When it rains the silk on the flag gets very wet, which makes it sticky. With a routine that involves lots of tosses and striping the silk, have the silk wet makes everything a lot harder. The pole also gets wet and slippery which makes holding on to the pole much more difficult. Then if you combine to two, one with think disaster would happen. However, the judges do not take weather into account so the guard is expected to be just as great in the day or shine. This makes the guard work harder which in turn make them
