Essay: Dangers And Consequences Of Online Harassment?
Consequences and Damages of Online Harassment Karla is 15 years old. She has an open profile on Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr and is online almost every day. She has a phone glued to her hand, and her open profiles are never being logged off. If Karla gets a notification, she immediately replies and does not even think about the senders because she is so focused on how many people are texting her or liking her picture she just recently posted. When Karla shares a picture, she even adds hashtags that make her picture visible by anybody. Unfortunately, the users are not only her friends from her school or clique, but also total strangers that are just waiting to find out more about her and even stalk or find private information to harass her sexually, physically, or emotionally. Karla is still very young and does not understand the dangers on the internet. She has no idea where her picture or information is saved …show more content…
Because of it, teenagers share a lot of private information that shouldn't be necessarily on the internet and available for almost everybody. However, teenagers spend too much time on social websites and are in constant danger of online harassment, which can lead to physical and emotional damages. Clarifying specifically the definition of online harassment, “It is the form of threatening behavior, most commonly used in the online life that colors the experience of many web users” (Duggan). Duggan Maeve, the author on the webpage PewResearchCenter, is a research assistant and contributes her information very clearly. She says that about 40% of online users have had incidents with online harassment and about 73% of adults were already harassed. Online harassment is a very serious matter to be considered and thought about closely.
