“If you don't like something, change it. If you can’t change it,change your attitude”
~ Maya Angelou

Children are irresponsible, messy, and careless. As children grow up, they tend to try to learn from their mistakes, and they mature. But, some people do not grow up mentally. In That was Then, This is Now, by S.E. Hinton, Bryon Douglas, who needs to go through his personal journey, has a friend, Mark, who is a tedious person who is endangering Bryon, and causes Bryon to make a life-changing decision in order to fully mature; I once had to go on a profound personal journey to adapt to middle school.

In this “then” period, Bryon was influenced by Mark. For example, on page 23, Bryon and Mark had the following conversation “‘You still in the mood for a little action?’ ‘Sure’ I said” By “action” Mark meant fighting. This shows that Mark influenced Bryon. He was probably so influenced by Mark who was his best friend from childhood. Mark grew into a manipulative and disarming teen. Bryon was doing illegal and irresponsible actions, but he felt bad about them. However Mark, had no regrets. In Bryon’s current lifestyle he is a calm person who stands up for the right and legal things. At this time, he is no longer friends with Mark because Mark was in prison due to Bryon's calling the cops on Mark for selling drugs. On page 154 Bryon narrated “I ended up with straight A’s that semester…” After his transformation, he had better logic.I developed and changed in order to survive middle school by pacing my work. I became more earnest about how much time I have to complete something and when I should start.

In conclusion, Bryon matured because he abandoned Mark and made a personal exploration of who he really is; I made a rough choice for the better to adapt to middle school. Byron made his personal journey by calling the police on Mark as an act of self preservation because Byron saw Mark doing

The main argument in the essay is that the writer who is writing the article is talking about how Greg was in highschool been wanting to kill his parents for awhile now. He has been smoking weed and getting high at a young age which therefor one of greg's friends said whatever he had his hands on he would do it. He said that kids at this age are constantly redefining themselves and what their friends think of them is more important than anything else. Greg was the person or kid he was because of family issues which his mom, would always complain to greg about everything. Along with adulthood comes responsibilities that many children are incapable of underholdning until they are forced into the real world with age. Childhood is a time of youth that brings happiness and color to the world. It only lasts so long, until the adjustments of teenhood hit and adulthood follows shortly behind. How people choose to cope with this adjustment determines their future forever. The novels My Antonia by Willa Cather’s, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and Greasy Lake by T.C Boyle all relate to each other under this broad topic, through transition from childhood into adulthood. Each author has chosen a significant way of explaining each character’s journey to adulthood from learning life experiences. There are various different…

One hundred years from now I believe this book will be read as it contains most problems faced by incoming freshmen in high school. The book is well written and is fun to read as the main character, Scott Hudson employs literary uses while he writes in his journal to his unborn sibling, who he calls Smelly of his high school experiences. Every teenager faces problems while in high school and some of them are addressed in this book. The issues that are evident in this book are friendship issues, school issues, family dynamics, transition from childhood to adulthood, and actions have consequences.…

To begin with, behavior and personality during freshman year reflected immaturing. When John was a freshman, he was really immature and he would do things like set off stink bombs on the bathroom. When he got older he did less immature things. This paragraph suggests, “But I gave up all that kid stuff now that I'm a sophomore. The only thing I do now that is faintly criminal is write on desks.” The suggests that John has stopped being immature and being more mature and acting like he was supposed to act.…

After Bryon, Mark, and M&M leave their hangout, they get into trouble on the way home. They get into a fight. Nobody is hurt bad, but it shows the lifestyle the boys are living. Bryon and Mark were as close as brothers. They even lived in the same house. Mark’s parents killed each other when he was young, and Bryon’s mother took Mark in, as her own. Mark and Bryon grew incredibly close over years, but obviously, they had moral differences that would hurt the relationship as time went on. Mark was really into doing stuff against the law like hotwiring cars and “borrowing” them. He also accepted many things, but Bryon had a better sense of morals. When the boys were young, these issues didn’t…

Growing up in the recent generations is very challenging. Children at such young ages, even younger than teens have been faced with such perilous decisions. It is especially hard for teenagers to find acceptance at this point in their lives. Here is an instance that is so common in this day and age, yet this particular case is only fiction. A teenage boy named Donny has been going through a few changes in his appearance. His parents, Matt and Daisy, are somewhat disturbed yet they don't say much to him. Then one day Daisy gets a call from Donny's school administrator and tells her that his grades are attitude are dropping scale. He eventually gets kicked out of private school and does poorly in public school. Daisy was concerned and decided to take advice from the school and psychologist to get help from a highly reputable tutor, Calvin Applebee. Instead of Donny's parents talking to their son they hire Cal, which tries to handle Donny's lack of emotion and performance. Donny's performance didn't change with Cal, at least in the school aspect, but Cal kept reassuring Daisy and Matt that it would change and to give it more time. In result, Donny runs away after being sent home because he was expelled for being caught with drugs in his locker and months later he still has not returned home. Who is to blame? Should Daisy and Matt been more disciplined on Donny? Well, in Anne Tyler's short story the Teenage Wasteland this is just what happened. I really enjoyed this story because I feel it really focused on an issue that is so common in our generation. It was easy to read and was straight to the point. I especially enjoyed the role of the dumbfounded parents, Cal's cynical character, and in result of the all their foolishness, the action Donny resulted in taking.…

    Looking for alaska

Alaska acts as a whirlwind in Mile’s life. Changing who he is and dealing with that is the heart of the book. It’s not the controversial side-events of a teen’s life (smoking, drinking, cursing, having “sexual relations”) that define a person or this book. It is the lesson of the mercurial nature of life and that change is an active verb not a static noun. High school is a time of life in which everything is in flux, your body, your moods, your relationships and your future all while you’re trapped in the “labyrinth of suffering.” Teens need to live in the moment and not to plan ahead. Change is not the one event in life from which nothing will ever be the same. To live is to change. It is life’s greatest constant that each moment something will be slightly different, and it is only at life’s end that it ceases and we become static. Alaska raced straight and fast through the labyrinth, desperately trying to outrun a change that started when she was eight years old. Instead she became trapped in the now, never looking backward or forward, never thinking to swerve and leaving everything “to be continued.”…

I have chosen the story called “Facing poverty with a rich girl’s habits” by Suki Kim. She starts out with very descriptive details on how her and her family went from the white picket fence and maids to staying with people and not having much at all. Another point I believe she tried to make was that she didn’t fit in very well, there were other Korean’s in the school, even in the same class as her but they didn’t have much in common. She had playmates but that didn’t last very long she didn’t speak English. Kim’s purpose in writing this story was to mainly say how she lost everything in a blink of an eye and ended up over here in America. This story would be nonfiction, and I would say her audience would be the people who have been through the struggle, the ones who have been there in life. Kim’s attitude comes off in the beginning as snotty, mad, an upset teenager, but when you’ve been through something dramatic like that you couldn’t say you wouldn’t feel angry. During the middle, it seems like she learns to deal with it, and realizing its part of life but it’s far from easy, but towards the end it seems like she’s more laid back and humble about life. My outlook on this story is that it was very eye catching from the title “facing poverty with a rich girl’s habits” to the very last word. It was very interesting to say the least. Knowing that unexpected things to happen in life, and that not only did she have to move but to have to learn a whole new language, a whole new culture ,and to leave everything behind that she once knew is really tough on an adult let alone a child. I’ve been there many times. Overall I’d say this was one of the best stories I’ve read.…

The book That was Then, This is Now is about to really good friends Bryon and Mark starting to become separated in their lives. The character that narrates the story, Byron is an influential teenager that many others can reminisce with and make their own connections. He is 16 years old and lives with his mom and his friend Mark whose parents got in a fight and his dad shot his mom dead. In the novel he describes himself as a “big guy” and also says “with dark hair and black eyes” (page 5). He also likes fights, hustling pool games and breaking some laws such as age ones. He lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma a rough and poor part of town like her similar book The Outsiders. Consequently, Byron, in the novel That was Then, This is Now is a likeable character…

As the paper says, some of the boys in the Dead Poets Society change like Charlie, Todd, and Neil, but other characters don’t, like Steven Meeks. Mr. Keating changed the lives of his students by making them enjoy, not only writing, poetry, and literature, but to also enjoy life and to see things differently than they normally would. He is unfortunately fired after being blamed for Neil’s death. His students for the most part stay loyal to him, especially Charlie Dalton, who is beaten with a paddle and expelled or his loyalty to Mr. Keating. Todd’s confidence grew exponentially by the…

Damion opened the door, excited to see his son. “Wow Dyl look how you’ve grown over these past few months!” Dylan gives him a sheepish smile and hugs him. They go into the house and start reminiscing on the school year... Then it came to discussing the report card. “So Dylan, let me see that report card. I want to see how my son has been progressing and making me proud.” Dylan nervously takes out the report card and while handing it to him he says, “Dad about my pre-law course, I...” Damion motions for him to stop talking so that he could be able to read the report card without any distractions. His expression changes from happy to angry in what almost seemed like a second. He looks at Dylan furiously and then asks, “What is this? What happened to your pre-law class, I did not send you to the most prestigious university in the country for you to throw away this opportunity! Why are you taking Music as a major? Didn’t I tell you, I would not be allowing you to throw away your life on this ridiculous entertainment lifestyle?” Dylan tries to explain to him that more than anything; he wanted to become a singer, that law just was not his passion. He had a different dream… But his father wouldn’t listen. “You disgust me. Seventeen years old and you still don’t know how to make good decisions. You are a disappoint to me and your mother would be turning in your grave right now if she realized what a fool you are making of yourself. “That’s why I found the saxophone in the attic the last time I came right? I know you’re secret dad. You were a musician and you loved it, playing the saxophone while mom sang was your passion and because it didn’t work for you, you think that you can prevent me from pursuing my dream.” “How dare you talk to me like that, you don’t know anything about my past, for God sakes, you barely know your mother!” “She wrote everything in her diary while she was sick, you just didn’t have the heart to show me. Everything you ever told me…
