Essay about electrostatic precipitation
Over the past few years the WHO (World Health Organization) concerned about the public health, conducted the largest global systematic study to discover the causes of major health risk factors, the statistics about air pollution stood out the most due to the deaths caused by air pollution. Michael Graham Richard reports that 3.5 million deaths are caused by indoor air pollution and 3.3 million deaths are caused due to outdoor pollution. This essay will be discussing the use of electrostatic precipitator in reduction of air pollution. In total number of deaths are 6.8 million, this results are twice as many deaths as previously thought. According to BBC News in recent years, carbon dioxide emission have become a serious environmental concern on a global scale. Because of their effect on the greenhouse effect which eventually affects climate change, scientists and individuals around the globe have become increasingly concerned with their environmental impact in relation to carbon dioxide. Besides water, air is the most vital resource on our planet. Clean air is crucial for the survival of all living things such as plants, animals and human beings. Air pollution has become a very common problem globally and it is resulted from various dangerous chemical substances which spread in the air such as CO2. The dangerous chemical substances are the product of human daily activities such as factory activities which produce tires and other object using fuels and machines that trigger the air pollution. As a result of the air being polluted with chemical gases which are harmful to the environment it can also lead to having acid rain. The harmful chemicals that are realised from factories such as carbon dioxide mix with rainwater which forms carbonic acid H2CO3 which result to acid rain. The formula for acid rain is CO2 + H2O H2CO3. The rainwater later finds its way to water bodies and threatens our existence. Moreover according to Tom Fuller the physics behind the theory of

Air pollution is the introduction into the atmosphere of chemicals, particulates, and biological matter that cause harm to humans, other living organisms, or cause damage to the natural environment. Stratospheric ozone depletion (contributed to air pollution) has long been recognized as a threat to human health as well as to the Earth’s ecosystems. The Earth is capable of cleaning itself of a certain level of pollution, but man-made pollutant have become too numerous for the Earth’s natural mechanisms to remove. We are seeing the results of this overload in the form of acid rain, smog, and the variety of health problems that can be contributed to our environment. (Godish)…

Although researches had been made and people start to know about acid rain, the fact that we live in a world that uses fossil fuel in almost all the electricity that powers modern life causes the acid rain to be emitted more and more into the atmosphere. Nowadays, the air pollution had reached to a point where the idea of reducing acid rain is not a subject of individual and scientists anymore; instead it is also our responsibility as people that live in the same world to know more about this matter and learn ways to help prevent it from getting worse.…

The positive combinations were the glass and fur (3.108 nC), clear plastic and fur (45.07 nC), glass and silk (1.979 nC), clear plastic and silk (19.60 nC), glass and green cloth (2.914 nC), clear plastic and green cloth (31.09 nC) materials. The negative combinations were the yellow plastic and fur (-81.57 nC), yellow plastic and silk (-75.49 nC), and yellow plastic and green cloth (90.30 nC) materials. The results are positive when the electrons flow from the glass and clear plastic because these materials have more electrons than the other materials, thus the electrons would flow from high concentration to low concentration. When the combinations are negative, that means that the electrons would flow into…

Because of all listed reasons the protection of environment is one of the most important and most demanding challenges placed in front of European Union to deal with. There have been many criticisms made that European Union is placing trade and economic development before care for environment. That is also one of the reasons why European Union decided to defend ratification of Kyoto protocol. This protocol places obligatory boundary values for emissions of greenhouse gases in industrialized states and is appointing new implementing mechanisms, founded on market laws, such as trading with emission coupons, common implementation and “mechanism of clean development”. Consequences of polluted environment are visibly reflected on health of all citizens of European Union. Especially in urban environment where noise, stress, air and water pollution are cause of many health conditions and allergies. Also on field of saving energy and dealing with waist a lot has been done already, however it is still necessary to look in to other numerous possibility 's for reducing to health harmful effects of wast materials.…

The history of acid rain caused by human activities began with the industrial Revolution in about 1750. This is when steam power began to be used to drive machinery. This was when large amounts of fossil fuels (coal, petroleum and natural gas) began to be burnt in order to produce energy. The problem of acid rain became gradually worse until 20th century, scientists began to observe widespread environmental damage. Since the problem of acid rain is discovered, changes have been made to prevent further damage to the environment and to undo the existing damage. For example, vehicles exhaust fumes which contain large amounts of nitrogen oxides and some sulphur dioxide. Much has been done to reduce these since 1983 in United States and 1993 in Europe, new cars have been…

The world motor vehicle population exceeds 1 billion units at the moment. These vehicles are used for transportation of people and products across various places around the world. As a result, they emit many pollutants. This is attributable to the action of their engines burning fuel to release energy, which is an inefficient process. Firstly, they release particulate matter consisting of both organic and inorganic substances into the atmosphere, through exhaust emissions. Secondly, they release Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), which have carcinogenic effects. Pollution from vehicles is a universally acknowledged problem. However, it varies depending on the nation and its population. For example, pollution from cars contributes to between 50 to 90 percent of the total in urban areas. This may not be the same for rural areas. However, motor vehicles still present a disadvantage to the environment and human life. It is, therefore, prudent to develop countermeasures to automobile-exhaust pollution.…

The earth’s atmosphere is a constantly moving body of gases that encircle our planet. This body of gases known as air is a mixture, not a chemical combination, of a number of gases; that is, each gas retains its own characteristic properties. It consists of about 78 percent nitrogen; 21 percent oxygen, and carries along with it water vapor, clouds, dust, smoke, soot, and a variety of chemical compounds. The remaining one percent contains all the other gases including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ozone, methane, and ammonia that contribute to harmful pollutants that are released into the air. Millions of tons of harmful gases are released into the air each year. According to The World Health Organization, 2.4 million people die each year from causes directly attributable to air pollution, with 1.5 million of these deaths attributable to in-door air pollution (World Health Organization, www.who.int). For the past several decades’ air pollution has become more of a health risk factor. What is air pollution? Air pollution is air that enters our atmosphere that contains undesirable substances such as gases, dust, chemicals, particulate matter, biological materials, fumes or odor in harmful amounts. That is, amounts which could be harmful to the health or comfort or humans and animals or which could cause damage to plants and materials. The use and release of certain chemicals can be of serious concern if they have significant impacts on human health or the environment. The substances that cause air pollution are called pollutants. An air pollutant is known as a substance in the air that can cause harm to humans and the environment. Pollutants can be in the form of solid particles, liquid droplets, or gases. In addition, they may be natural or man-made. Pollutants that are pumped into our atmosphere and directly pollute the air are called primary pollutants. Pollutants can be classified as primary or secondary. Primary pollutants are directly…

Air pollution, water pollution, global warming, and ozone depletion are some of the issues we confront every day that mirror the outcomes of our activities. Satti Swami Reddy and Kola Siva Tharun, (2013) said the cars we drive emit exhaust gas, whose harmful components affects the environment which causes acid rain and global warming. Carbon dioxide is one of the main greenhouse gas which is emitted to the thin air through human activities through the burning of fossil fills such as coal, natural gas and oil for energy and transportation. Due to high environmental concerns, various countries have been attempting to try resolving these problems and one the outcome is the invention of hybrid cars, which can help contribute to save the environment by giving off less emission. Yost (2006) said the innovation of hybrid cars have helped to decrease gas emission especially carbon dioxide considerably to…

Everyday actions cause pollutants; one major contributor to air pollution that humans produce is carbon monoxide. We do this simply by driving our automobiles. This toxic pollutant is considered a primary air pollutant because it enters our air directly from the source; our motor vehicles. Human made pollution is something that we can change by using less fuel, coal and oil in our cars, home and factories. Standards have been set by government agencies to help regulate the levels of pollutants in the air. In many cases it is too late. The air pollution control act of 1955, which established federal grants for research and the Clean Air Act (CAA) that further extended the federal government powers for direct intervention to reduce pollution, were established because of increasing detriments to human’s health and the environment. (Christoforou, 2004) The health hazards that are a result of air pollution have become more common to our elderly and young children. Lung disease, asthma, chest pain or even death, are the results of our careless activities. In the 1930s in Belgium, SO2,(sulfur dioxide), and particulate matter combined with high relative humidity and caused 65 deaths in less than 5 days (Christoforou, 2004).…

Electrostatics is a part of physics is that the study and analysis of electricity, its properties and its applications. Electrostatics was discovered when an ancient Greek philosopher named Thales. In 600 B.C., Thales learned that when he rubbed amber with fur, it would start to attract other lightweight objects such as feathers and dust which is now known as a process called triboelectrification. This is also how we got the word electricity, which comes from the Greek word, elektron, which means amber. Thales, who is now known as one of the Seven Wise Men, is believed to be the first person to ever experiment with electrostatics. After the death of Thales, no further experiments were conducted dealing with electrostatics until the 17th century when a man by the name of William Gilbert continued Thales’s research. He studied magnetism and static electricity. Gilbert repeated the experiment by Thales with rubbing and charging objects using friction. He later invented the word “electric” to label the forces at work for whenever an object repelled or attracted the other one. He discovered that when objects rubbed, the act removed a fluid (humour) from one of the objects and it also left an atmosphere (effluvium) around the object.…

In the past few decades, human being caused a serious pollution to environment because of their development and innovation. According to Pruss-Üstün and Corvalán (2006), World Health Organization studies have examined the summation disease burden owing to key environmental risks globally and regionally, quantifying that there are various factors that could negatively contribute to the number of death and disease such as water pollution, sanitation and indoor and outdoor air pollution. In the contemporary society, vehicle plays a vital role in the daily life, but at the same time some transport will release sulphur dioxide and hazardous gases into the air. There are many places in the earth where a lot of air pollutant emissions from vehicles including carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or hydrocarbons (HCs), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter (PM) will cause global warming and acid rain (Zhang& Batterman, 2013: 307). In addition, water pollution is also harmful for the safety of human-beings and balance of the nature. More than one billion people nearly 1/5 of the population lack safe drinking water, forty percent people lack basic sanitation facilities (West, 2006). The cause of this situation due to many factor, but most of all is because of the human activities water pollution from many factor by human behavior such as mining, manufacturing, agriculture, power production, and urban run-off and suburban sprawl (Zeliger, 2008). More and more man-made pollution…
