Throughout President Franklin Roosevelt’s Pearl Harbor speech, he uses various devices to appeal to the audience listening. Although, the most effective excerpt from the speech is when President Roosevelt depicts the resilience and determination of the United States to fight back, both figuratively and metaphorically, “With confidence in our armed forces - with the unbounding determination of our people - we will gain the inevitable triumph - so help us God” (paragraph 17). By accentuating the unity of the nation with “our” armed forces and “our” people, Mr. President utilizes both pathos and parallelism. Pathos is exerted by the use of the pronouns “our” and “we”, in which Roosevelt includes himself with the rest of the Americans involved…

Americans are people who are accepting of every race and religion, and believe that all men are equal under the eyes of the law. This belief is a staple to American culture and is vital to our nation as a whole. For example, in the anthem “My country ‘tis of Thee” by Samuel Francis Smith, multiple lines continue to repeat the idea that America believes in freedom under the law to do as one pleases and live as he or she would like. The anthem calls America the “sweet land of liberty” and proclaims “let freedom ring!” This anthem shows that Americans truly believe in freedom and equality for everyone, and that the ideas of liberty are essential to the functioning of our…

Most people believe that being an american means that you can get away with doing whatever you want because they have freedom of speech or the rights to do it, but sometimes those rights don’t apply and to me that seems like they are just trying to take advantage of what everyone believes what being an American means. What being an American means to me is that I have the rights to do anything. Even though we are able to have all of these rights doesn’t mean we are able to take advantage of them there are still consequences for our actions. All the people in the Navy, Army, Air-force etc have the job to protect us, not everyone who shoots people just because. Being an American to me means being respectful to everyone. Like what Harry S Truman said, “you know that being an American is more than a matter of where your parents came from. It is a belief that all men are created equally and that everyone deserves an even break.” Being an American means to be brave loyal and kind to everyone no matter what. We…
