After a year of living in our small two bedroom house we decided that we needed to add another bedroom. We had made all the decisions of what we wanted it to look like such as the size of the room, the size of the closet and what we what kind of mood the atmosphere would give us. I wanted the room to feel welcoming, warm and cozy, like sitting next to a warm fireplace on a cold snowy night. I wanted to call this room my quiet space where I can relax, read, and be big enough to hold all of our belongings. I wanted a room to hide away from the screaming children, which was my main goal.…

The beach is one of the most beautiful places in the world. Before visiting, I had only been to the four states, which is the stringy grassy fields, the forest of trees, the smelly white and black cows and pink curly tailed pigs. See I had never seen any other states but Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. I love the picture in my head but it was nice to finally see something different.…

I remember, as a child, my first trip to the carnival. I stood at the entrance, my small hand held firmly by a larger one belonging to a much more confident adult, as I took in my surroundings. The flashing lights, the music and screaming all had me gawking at anything and everything that my eyes happened upon. What caught and kept my attention were the rides that seemed to torture their occupants. It still amazes me that average, ordinary people eagerly trade in the serenity and security of the ground for the chance to be tossed through the air like vegetables in a food processor. It is somewhat awe inspiring to think that at some time in history, someone thought people would enjoy the above torment. As an adult, it is precisely this thrill and excitement of having survived the ride that keeps me coming back for more.…

My first car was my first most prized possession. I’d named her, tested her out on interstates, and took good care of her like she was one of my children. She had mirror tinted windows and was deep ocean blue that gleamed in the summer sun, she was flawless. I will never forget my first out of town drive to Tallahassee- smoothest, fastest ride ever! Had it not been for the scenery I would’ve felt like I was driving in a race. I remember cruising from lane to lane passing other drivers as if they were just trees barely moving. It was 2006 and so was the year of my car so I felt like we were unstoppable.…

There are not too many sunny days in the winter like today. It’s a little bit chilly, but nothing unusual for the weather in December. Stepping outside the house and going to take the Oath of Allegiance, in order to become a citizen, the fresh cold air clears my head and worries. I look for as many details as I can capture. The first thing that draws my attention is a clear blue sky. Its color is so pure that it almost looks unreal. A few clouds spread around the sky forming interesting shapes. On the horizon a vapor trail of an airplane draws a perfect straight line. The bright sunshine makes me squint. A cold wind occasionally whips around and causes me to shiver. I go inside of the car to get some cover. As I lean on the seat to get more comfortable, I start driving and I continue to look outside.…

When I was younger there was a place I used to go when I was sad, angry, or confused. I went there often. It was a rather large castle hidden on an Island and surrounded by a forest. It was where I felt safe. This was my hideaway when I was in foster care; somewhere I could go to when things got to be too much for me.…

Virginia Irene Dill has raised many children, and that makes her the strongest person I know. My name is Kamilu. It is the only name I’ve ever heard and now what I call myself. I have grown up in a homeless shelter, in the beautiful lands of India. As a child this place never scared me even when I was alone at night with no mother to give me comfort. These old brick walls are my home. It is filled with the only people I’ve known my entire life. The superannuated streets are enclosed by the very building which the emperors lived. The walls are rich as the white pearl of gold. It has been carved a masterpiece and the only beautiful castle in all the lands. “I will live like that someday” I tell myself.…

Its rugged exterior presents a shabby disposition. Many new t-shirts have found their way into the velvet lined drawers of my antique armoire. Thick, strong oak wood was carved into curves and poles all connected to be shaped into the perfect rocking chair. It was painted a deep brown that glints gold when the sun shines on it. The armrests mold to your arms like they were carved precisely for you. It feels like your melting into chair even though it’s a stiff wooden frame. The seat cushion used to be thick and luscious but has become thinner and thinner as the years have passed. It remains tied to the chair by two thin strings that keep in attached tightly to the back of the rocker. The chair is old but the age only makes it more important and extraordinary.…
