Review Chapter 2: Basic Concepts and Terminology (pp. 13-19). In one-to two-paragraphs, reflect on the following questions: How do you feel about having to learn all these concepts and terminology? Estimate the percentage of new concepts this chapter presented to you. How does this chapter help your learning in this class?
The basic concepts and terminology that are introduced in chapter 2 definitely seemed overwhelming at first sight. However, as I was going through each meaning, I realized that I already knew the meaning of some of the terms such as prefix, suffix, consonants, context, decode, fluency, morpheme, syllable, syntax, vocabulary, vowels and word recognition. These are just a handful of simple common words that were taught in elementary school. However, its all the other words and their minute details that made me a bit nervous about learning them. The authors state, “As with so many other areas of education, teachers need to know these terms and their underlying concepts, but students do not” (Rasinski & Padak, 2013). After reading that statement, I became more worried about not just learning the concepts, but also about storing those meanings in my long-term memory. I plan on using index cards to help me memorize these new terms.
From the entire list of literacy terms, about 90% of the concepts are fairly new to me. The words that are presented in chapter 2 are sort of like the foundation of this class. If I am confident about the meanings of those terms and concepts, then I will have a good grasp on all the new information that will be built on top of it. In order to discuss and teach various skills to students (word recognition, vocabulary, phonics etc.), I have to first have concrete understanding about the basic concepts and terminology myself. When I am fully aware of these early literary terms and concepts, then I will understand and also be able to teach my students.
