Will a binding minimum wage create more unemployment in the short run or in the long run? Explain.
Eventually people will start wanting to work for more money and with a binding minimum wage this will be difficult as it won’t be up to them. However, factors such as education can alter this. If people in the future are more educated and qualified, they’ll expect higher wages which they mightn’t receive. Also if people in general spend more, that will increase supply, which will result in more workers needed, resulting in higher paying jobs. It is a risk to have a binding minimum wage and I think it’s not a risk worth taking.

First, if we apply the universally accepted law of supply and demand, both sides do agree that raising the minimum wage will result in a significant increase in unemployment, because as labor costs increase, employers will demand less of it. Employers will most likely cut jobs, raise prices, reduce benefits, outsource jobs to foreign markets, use technology and automation to reduce the need for human labor or a combination of these approaches in order to preserve profits. A less likely scenario would have companies accepting lower profits on behalf of their shareholders. For some small businesses in lower cost of living markets, like Mississippi and Arkansas, these changes may not be enough to prevent them from going out of business.…

The real question is, which sides outweigh the other? We know now that there are flaws and perks to increasing the minimum wage but would it be worth it to even change it at all? Should we lower it? According to Sarah Shemkus, an award-winning journalist from salary.com “An employee working a 40-hour week at the federal minimum wage would earn $15,080 per year.” This small annual amount of money is just barely under the…

    Minimum Wage

Minimum wage is defined as the lowest possible income that an employer can legally pay an employee. This ensures that all people are fairly paid and not defrauded by companies or businesses. Minimum wage is now a staple in 90 percent of countries in the world (Minimum). Even with these minimums, a person’s lifestyle is hard to maintain. Sustainability, in my opinion, is the ability to keep or maintain a certain amount of physical or mental property. In this light of sustainability, minimum wage is not a sustainable amount of money in which to survive with a basic quality of life. There are many supporters and objectors to the minimum wage debate. Supporters say that increasing minimum wage increases the workers earning power and wages. Objectors say that increasing minimum wage only leads to unemployment due to small companies’ inability to pay workers. Also the increased inflation rate of goods only hurts the economy, which leads to many jobs being lost, mainly the jobs held by minimum wage patrons. Although this is a heated debate there is one thing to which both sides agree; something needs to be implemented so that workers are not exploited by businesses. Economists are exploring the viability of minimum wage, the standard minimum wage payments, and if there is anything we can do to keep the world on an equal playing field.…

We believe that gradually raising the minimum wage will increase the standards of living of workers, reduces poverty, reduces inequality and help businesses work efficiently. Raising minimum wage is essential because the cost of living has gone up considerably. The increase in cost of living makes it impossible to raise a family on a minimum wage job. An average minimum wage worker earns about $14,500 a year leaving way too many families below the poverty line. The poverty rates in America have been going up gradually and minimum wage would help relieve the problem.…

Some people believe that raising minimum wage will help with economic growth, while others believe that minimum wage would do the opposite and actually force the manager to lay off many employees and raise unemployment levels. After researching both sides of this argument I believe that minimum wage should not be raised because after the price is higher, the company will not have enough money to pay all their employees and would have to make sacrifices such as laying off employees and maybe replacing them with machines so they don't have to pay them. If the minimum wage is raised many bad things could happen because of it.…

The minimum wage has long been argued has whether it should be increased or whether it should remain the same. Many who are unskilled or below the poverty line rely on minimum wage to provide for. themselves and their families. The minimum wage was set at a certain amount to ensure that the poverty rate remains low. By increasing the minimum wage, a positive or negative effect may arise such as the increase of poverty or the decrease of poverty. Many argue if the minimum wage is increased it will reduce poverty because working families will be able to afford essential, the money will support the worker and families. On the other hand, however, through increasing the minimum wage many consequences may arise such as the increased cost of goods,…

Multiple Americans differ in their opinions whether the minimum wage affects negatively or positively based on their living circumstances. The minimum wage rising would have positive and negative outcomes to the economy, however, it is proven and concluded that the low-skilled workers would be the ones that would be more affected. However, the minimum wage does assist Americans, but can also have negative outcomes towards them. The current minimum wage of California may be $10.50, throughout the years the wages will rise even more, and the labor will increase as well. The economy is designed to match the affluence it creates.…

    Higher Minimum Wage Essay

I am of the opinion that raising the minimum wage is not a good idea. There are too many risks that outweigh the benefits. The author does a great job illustrating this, with examples of other countries experiences. The author never proposes a solution, however. It may be that there is no solution, that unemployment is unavoidable. However, I have always wondered about the idea of having two wages; a minimum and a livable wage. Minimum wage would stay where it is, allowing jobs to stay available to those low-income families, while other workers can ask their employers for a more “livable wage”. This livable wage could also incentivize the workers and increase production. Of course, this is only my second economics course, so this may not be possible, however, there must not be a higher minimum wage. Through supply and demand the ugly truth about the seemingly harmless idea of paying workers more is exposed for all to…

The most positive outcome would be that minimum wage would raise and there would be less people struggling to make their bills, fewer on government assistance, and more people being able to work to better their lives. Another outcome would be that things would be slightly more affordable, same possibility as before, but on a smaller scale. A negative outcome, with my proposed solution would be a type of inflation. The prices of groceries, rent, etc., would raise because of minimum wage raising and society would be in the same shape as before, struggling to make ends meet. Another negative outcome is that minimum wage would be raised too slow to make a difference. Going along with the first negative outcome, prices are continuously going up, regardless of minimum wage. If minimum wage is raised too slowly, it will not be able to keep up with the ever-rising prices of everything…

    Is Minimum Wage Ethical?

Certainly, it is fair to say that the portrayed intentions of minimum wage are promising. However, one must understand the monetary concept behind this main idea by taking into account the ends of the proposed idea. Why not twenty-dollars as minimum wage? Why not thirty-dollars? Or even a thousand-dollars as minimum wage? As a general overview, minimum wage supporters tend to lie about the terrible idea that minimum wage seeks the common good for everyone. However, it is important to understand that, since employers do not have “a cave with hidden money ” to pay infinite amount of money to employees, therefore employers will only hire people that are experienced and worth paying twenty-dollars per hour per se. In essence, the possibility for young people to acquire a job will reduce extremely. For this reason, this idea violates one of the main principles of ethics — promise-keeping and trustworthiness. That is to say, minimum wage supporters and some politicians interpret this idea in an unreasonably technical or legalistic manner in order to rationalize non-compliance or create justifications for escaping their commitments. That is simply…

    Minimum Wage

The concept of minimum wage is to ensure that employers do not pay wages below the mandated level. However this does not always happen instead this policy ends up hurting these workers and the economy in terms of lower job opportunities. This is because the increase of labor costs keeping all other things constant would eat into the net profits of the company. Therefore in order to offset the decrease in profits, the need for low skilled labor decreases and companies look for higher productivity workers.…

The “employment effect” (De Fraja, 1999) suggests that an increase in minimum wage will restrict job opportunities, resulting in a loss of jobs and potential lowering of the participation rate. On the other hand, more people will potentially be lured to the job market by higher paying jobs. Brown (1998) states that these views are theoretical and don’t necessarily equate to what will occur due to arrange of other issues such as whether displaced workers continue to look for employment and hence remain part of the participation rate. Also if an economy is in a growth cycle then it is unlikely unemployment would result from a minimum wage increase.…

My hypothesis is that minimum wage affects unemployment rate in a positive way. In other words, when minimum wage increases by a positive amount, one should expect that unemployment rate will also increase. This is based on the basic theory of demand and supply, business owners often make decisions based it. When the demand for certain product increases, companies must increase their production output to meet the demand. Increasing supply usually requires additional labor. When the wages of the employees increased, the employer’s demand of hiring employees will decrease. Minimum wage is creating a price floor; the demand and supply will no longer be equilibrium. As the price floor goes up, there will be more surplus. Therefore, the unemployment rate will increase when the minimum wage increased. [See Figure 1]…

With minimum wage being set the economy is effected because of the black market. With this being said there are business that work illegally bringing in immigrants from other countries because they do not have to pay them as much as they do legal citizens. The company can now make more profit, and pay employees little to nothing for the same workload. This then leads to unemployment among US citizens. With illegal immigrants taking labor enduring job opportunities, which require little to no skill or background knowledge needed to business owners it’s a no brainer. This leaves our Americans under the poverty level receiving government assistance and hurting those who pay taxes, and those who are in desperate need of a job at a reasonable minimum wage…
