First, we are putting the NHS on the side of the patient by going further than ever before in finding things that are going wrong and fixing them. So we have created a new job for a Chief Inspector of hospitals. We are giving proper protection for whistleblowers to expose poor quality of care and the culture of secrecy which so fatally undermined Mid-Staffordshire NHS Trust. Our surgeons and GPs are beginning to share data on outcomes more freely than anywhere else in the world. And our Friends and Family Test gives patients and staff chance to say whether they would recommend a hospital to their loved ones, with all that information published and real consequences for the board of the hospital if the figures are bad.…

In my aspirations to become a Registered Nurse, I volunteered at Humber River Hospital. I started as a co-op student in high school, and as I met with nurses and doctors there I decided to continue volunteering after my co-op placement. Volunteering at a hospital has been the most valuable experience for me because it gave me a chance to see the roles of nurses.…

During my time there I really enjoyed talking to, caring for and developing a relationship with the service users. The experience genuinely helped broaden my perspective; it enabled me to focus outside of myself and my own little world and it made me realise I wanted to be in a profession that helps people. At the care home I acquired skills essential for comforting people who may have been restless and I was also able to control stressful situations in a confident and calm manner. To gain further insight into the nursing field I also obtained work experience at Darent Valley Hospital. This invaluable opportunity enabled me to observe the nurses' interactions with patients in the wards and how they cooperated with the doctors. I was presented with the opportunity to shadow a nurse in the chemotherapy department where I was able to see the way she comforted the patients and their families and the way she educated the patients about their next step to better health and…

I observed different kinds of childbirths and pregnancies. One particular birth stood out to me where the lady was homeless after suffering from domestic abuse. I was able to see the empathetic and professional way midwives have to deal with those situations. By keeping calm I was able to communicate with the women and calculate the dynamics of the situation, doing simple jobs like offering water and assisting the midwives with medicines. In a place that was an unfamiliar environment for me I feel I was able to adapt and fit well into the team. Another circumstance where I showed the NHS values was whilst volunteering in Sri Lanka, working with underprivileged children and teenagers teaching them dance, arts, and crafts. At times it was difficult to communicate with them as they spoke little English, however, through the use of hand signals and my own body language I built relationships with them that I will never forget. I feel this demonstrates by ability to make strong connections with a wide range of people which will help when supporting the mothers. I also went on World Challenge, trekking across Iceland, which I funded myself. My role within the team was to lead them on trails through the mountains, where I was able to express my good sense of leadership. All these experiences have strengthened my resolve to become a…
