Escape From Camp 14 Analysis
Napoleon Hill once said, “Strength and growth come only through continuous effort and struggle.” This quote relates to Shin’s growth as an individual who is trying to escape Camp 14 and North Korea’s growth as a country. In the book, Escape from Camp 14, Shin is struggling to get out of Camp 14 so, he can experience the outside world while North Korea is struggling to hold together, but ends up growing from the struggle. In conclusion, Shin, and North Korea are similar in many ways through their struggles are a little different though similar. Shin’s growth as a person mirrors the change that North Korea is growing as a country.

This example is similar to Uncle taking care of Shin in the cell for about 6 months. Also, this example shows that North Korea is evolving as a country because it accepted help from South Korea and is trying to help the hunger problem by providing food and fertilizer. Additionally, the book also says that “North Korea would’ve lost the Korean War and disappeared as a state without the help of the Chinese, who fought the United States and other western forces as a stalemate.” This example relates to Shin getting help from the old man by the Tumen River. Moreover, this example shows how North Korea evolved as a country since it got help from a country they don’t consider a friend. Also, this example shows that government is trying to make a change and started to build a hydroelectric dam. The book also says, “The lyrics of “Song of the Winter Solstice,” which recent defectors say is the theme song of a popular program on North Korean television…” This example relates to Shin singing the song with Park even though he could get in trouble. Also, this example shows that North Korea has changed because the songs people in North Korea could sing had to honor the leaders, but this song is about companions who endure hardship and pain.
