Error Analysis on the Written Compositions of Freshmen Education Students of PUNP: Basis for the development of prototype writing activities

RATIONALE

Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man and writing an exact man. Francis Bacon (1942)

One of the most significant social inventions of man is language. Language consists of a system of sounds, a collection of words, some changes in word forms, and some patterns onto which the words fit to convey. It may or may not have a system of writing and printing. Language requires a combination of formal structure, that is a clear set of standards, and communicative application which includes recognition of variations which includes recognition of variations from the rules. (Bidly Stok, 1998)

As social being therefore, man has to develop his language proficiency. His ability to communicate properly and correctly is man’s edge over the other members of the animal kingdom. This involves the four skills; listening, speaking, reading and writing. Of the four writing is considered the weakest component for it requires thorough and careful organization of thoughts and ideas. The ability to write in English is a very significant asset of every student because writing is one of the skills that students should develop to be successful in any endeavor they encounter in the near future. Thus, a student should be able to express himself in both oral and written English. The written English proficiency of students has significantly deteriorated. In the elementary and high schools, this could be rationally traced to the inadequacy of effective textbooks, instructional materials and lack of funds, aggravated by the fact that quality of textbooks has also deteriorated. (Philippine Star December 26, 1998)

Of the four language skills writing is given significant consideration and attention because the acquisition of writing skill in the language instruction enhances the students’ proficiency

Writing is important in Americans society for four reasons. I think we’d all agree that communication is pretty important. In fact, it’s a necessary component of education, livelihood, and basic functionality in our society. It’s also fairly obvious that there are two main ways to communicate, although more obscure forms exist. Basically, we talk and we write. That’s how we let other people know what’s going on, and it’s an important skill to have. Just about every student can talk, but how many can truly write well…

As foreign language students we possess the capacity to learn a new language, for example English. It might be easy to speak it, read it and listen it, but what about writing? Writing might be disliked and avoided for students because it is frustrating. It is frustrating because it is unnatural. Speaking is natural and not frustrating; when we speak, our words flow out easily. We do not think about the grammatical correctness of the utterances, nor do we think about mechanics. We do not repeat utterances over and over again to check for correctness or appropriateness. Most writing, on the contrary, does not flow out smoothly or spontaneously, we are constantly checking for correctness. In order to avoid that apathy and those difficulties that embrace students when writing in English, teachers need to analyze them so they could overcome that lack of interest they have when learning the writing of English. Those difficulties are going to be exposed in this essay.…
