Err Vanessa George Assignment
Vanessa George has been an employee for 3 years at Little Ted’s day nursery in Plymouth. Neighbours describe Miss George as a respectable member of the community, co-workers and parents describe her as being a fun and bubbly person who was easy to get along with. Before starting at Little Ted’s she worked as a classroom assistant in an unnamed school for 6 years.

To make a little extra on her time off she would child mind for local parents in the community. In 2008 Miss George joined a Facebook group “against child abuse” and was still a member of this group while committing her crimes. Miss George has 2 teenaged daughters whose names were not released due to privacy reasons never the less an indecent photograph was found of her 14 year old. Miss George was arrested on the 8th June 2009 and charged with 7 counts of sexual assault and 6 counts of producing and distributing indecent pictures of children.

On 11th June 2009 in Her Majesties crown court in Bristol George pleaded guilty to all charges. Just prior to her arrest she told police, “I knew this would happen. I can’t believe what I have done. That family don’t know anything about it I’m disgusted with myself I can’t believe what I have done I love children” then corrected herself to “I love working with children.” Originally the number of children involved was feared to be as high as 300 but this was disproven by local police and narrowed down to around 30 but this was still too high for societies liking.

On 15th December 2009 Miss George was jailed for her crimes of producing and distributing indecent pictures of the children under her care in the nursery by Mr Justice Royce as judge presiding, Mr Simon Morgan as the prosecution, and in her defence was Mr Nicolas Gerasimidis.

Miss George was sentenced indefinitely - it was explained to her that if she could prove to the courts that she was no longer a danger to the public society then parole would consider sanctioning her premature

On Dec 11th 2006 Peter was taken to hospital with extensive bruising, the doctors referred the case to the Metropolitan Police’s Child abuse investigation team and Peter was given to a family friend to be looked after. The police then arrested Peter’s mother on suspicion of assaulting her son, she denied the claims. Peter was then placed on the child protection register. After just five weeks of being cared for by the family friend Peter was returned to the care of his mother. The police passed a file about Peter’s injuries to the CPS (crown prosecution service), which requested further investigation. A little later the family are moved to a larger house and Haringey council appoints Maria ward as the family’s new social worker. Once again Peter is admitted to hospital, this time with more bruising, black eyes and swelling on his head. Through the use of her own words, Imogen Tyler has researched and divulged into the emergence of the word “chav” in the English language. Her article not only traces the history of the word “chav” and the “chav figure” it also concentrates on “the figure of the female chav, and the vilification of young white working-class mothers” (Tyler). She also goes on to talk about the “historically familiar and contemporary anxieties about female sexuality, reproduction, fertility, and “racial mixing”. Using examples such as the ill-famed “Vicky Pollard” character from the popular and well known British character-based comedy sketch show, Little Britain to back up her argument of how the word chav has evolved to become a term of abuse to describe the white poor.…

Next to the witness stand was the notorious, Bob Ewell, father of Mayella and God knows how many more children. He handled all the questions in a nonchalant sarcastic tone with bits of unnecessary profanity. During his testimony, Judge Taylor stated there has been a request to “clear the court”. Taylor, afraid of Mr. Ewell’s foul language damaging the innocent ears of women and young children, said this as a precautionary warning to Ewell. Judge Taylor also stated that he’ll let everyone stay unless they begin to misbehave, which in that case, he would have them up for contempt of court.…

516 1.1) The policies, procedures and practices for safe working with children and young people all stem from the murders of Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman by Ian Huntley. From this horrific act of evil the Safeguarding Vulnerable Group Act 2006 was born (see evidence ‘6’ – 520 1.3). Another public enquiry was set up to address the failure of the law after the death of Victoria Climbié. Within this enquiry, Lord Laming called for changes to be made in child protection policies. From this there was a new incentive born called ‘Every Child Matters’ in 2003. This became one of the most far reaching policy incentives to be released in the last 10 years. It covers children and young adults up to the age of 19 or 24 for those with disabilities. This also led to changes in the Children’s Act in 2004 and provided a detailed framework for working with children within multi agency partnerships. The themes that were adopted by all agencies working with children are –…
