Eriksons Theory of Development
Erikson's Theory of Psychosocial Development is based on the development of what is termed the ‘Ego Identity'. According to Erikson our ego identities are ever changing, partly due to the interactions in our daily lives, but mostly how those interactions are perceived by us as we mature and age. Erikson's Theory of psychosocial behavior can be easily understood using the table below. Each stage has a goal of competence and plays a role in the development of social and psychological skills.

6-11 Industry vs. Inferiority
12-18 Identity vs. Role Confusion
19-40 Intimacy vs. Isolation

65 older Ego Integrity vs. Despair

The first phase is critical as it occurs during infancy, a time of total dependence for the baby. The babe must have a stable a nurturing environment to live and gain a foundation for trust in others. There is a popular comic strip entitled Baby Blues written from the perspective of a baby (from birth to 5 yrs thus far) and her parents. Through humorous, satirical anecdotes and sketches we are able to sympathize with the baby trapped in the world of the overworked, underpaid parent who doesn't speak the same language.

The second stage lovingly referred to by most as the ‘terrible two's' is another critical turning point in psychosocial behavior. This is the age the pull-up commercials were made for right? Right. At this age the name of the game is "I can do it" even though everybody knows otherwise. There really is nothing terrible about this phase except for the parent who does not allow the child enough independence to develop the confidence essential for positive self image.

With the home front conquered the next phase introduces the child to the preschool arena where the confident child quickly sets about to determine her/his place in the outside world. Remember Kindergarten Cop? Of course you do, the one with Arnold…anyway the kids in that class were apart of their hierarchy. Even at this age there is a popular kid amongst the group.

Elementary aged children are tested daily on their gradual learning abilities and memory. Those receiving support from teacher and parents are more likely to feel successful and perhaps become successful when compared to children who receive little or no praise, or encouragement from adults.

    Sensorimotor and pre operational are the first two stages. Sensorimotor stage begins at birth and ends through age 2. During this stage, children learn object permanence which means children are able to understand that an object is still there even though they cannot see it anymore. Preoperational stage begins from age 2 and ends around age 7. During this stage, they experience egocentrism which means they have an inability to understand others viewpoint from theirs. There are four stages of language development, babbling which begins around 0-4 months, one word which begins around 1 year, two words which begin around 18 months, and multiple word sentences and this starts around 2 years of age. The next two stages are concrete operational and formal operational. Concrete operational occurs at ages 7-11 and is when they can think logically about objects and events and they can achieve conservation of numbers. Formal operational occurs around ages 11 years and older and they think logically about proportions and test hypothesis while becoming hypothetical and ideological about problems. Another psychologist, Erik Erikson, was best known for the psychosocial stages of development which outlines the personality development from birth to old age. There are eight psychosocial stages; the first is trust vs. mistrust and develops from birth to age one and is the most fundamental stage in one's life. An infant is entirely dependent on the caregiver's quality of care. The next stage is autonomy vs. shame/doubt and this is where children ages 18 months to 2 start to feel greater self-control and start potty training, toy preferences, clothing selection, and food choices all allow them to feel greater personal sense of acknowledge.
