Equality 7-2521
Equality 7-2521 lived in a Dark Age in which every aspect of life was controlled by a ruling council. As a child, Equality 7-2521 wanted more than anything to be a scholar. He believed that he was cursed with curiosity, and was often rebuked by his teachers for being too smart and too tall. He tried to comply to the standards, but no matter how much he tried, he was smarter than his fellow brothers. When the Council of Vocations assigned him to be a street sweeper instead of a scholar, he was disappointed, but knew he could not do anything about it.

During his duties, Equality 7-2521 found an underground tunnel where he could be alone with his thoughts. He knew this was a great crime, for the law stated no man may ever do anything alone.

Since he refused to tell his Home Council where he had been, he was thrown into the Palace of Corrective Detention. There he was tortured, but refused to tell where he had been, in fear of his invention being revealed. When the time came for the World Council to gather in his city, he broke out of the Palace of Corrective Detention and went to the World Council’s meeting. When he arrived, he was expecting to be praised and celebrated. However, when Equality 7-2521 arrived and told the World Council his story, they rejected him out of fear and anger. They threatened to kill him and to get rid of his lightbulb. In fear of the destruction of his lightbulb, he took his invention and left the city. He ran to the Uncharted Forest where he discovered that he was free at last to do as he pleased.

A while later, the Golden One appeared. She had followed Equality 7-2521 into the woods. They consented to live together in peace. After they had been wandering for several days in the mountains, they found an abandoned building from a time before theirs. They were mesmerized at the number of books and finery that they found in the building. Equality 7-2521 soon discovered the meaning of the word “I.” From there, he promised to protect his home and launch a new race of men and women who would believe in individualism and the forever

Equality 7-2521 strongly resembles the Greek mythological creature, Prometheus, in many ways. They both are very different from their people. Prometheus was a titan who was nothing like the other titans. He fought to defeat his brothers so that the gods could rule. Likewise, Equality is obviously nothing like the people of his society as he was told earlier in the book. “‘There is evil -in your bones, Equality 7-2521, for your body has grown beyond the bodies of your brothers.’”* Prometheus is especially known for introducing fire to mankind, just as Equality planned to revolutionize the world with his light bulb. But when he introduced it to the Council, they denied it. In fact they were scared of his light. Another obvious similar characteristic the two share is their will to sacrifice anything for their beliefs. Prometheus knew he would be punished for stealing the fire from Zeus, but still refused to keep it away from mankind. “…and he suffered for his deed.”* For his punishment, Zeus chained him to a rock and sent a bird to eat his liver. Every day his liver would grow back, so every day the bird returned for his meal. This punishment was meant for eternity. Equality also knew over his long term research that he would be punished severely if anyone found him, but still did not stop in his…

One particular day, The Golden One suddenly stopped and told Equality 7-2521, "We are one... alone... and only... and we love you who are one... alone... and only," (87). In saying this, The Golden One again stands for Equality 7-2521's ideals, because she is trying to express her individual love for him, not using the word "we." She was never taught the word "I," therefore does not know how to say "I love you." She instead refers to herself as "alone and only" to show that she means only she loves him. This represents independence, because that Golden One is trying to break away from referring to herself as "we," which would imply her whole community. Now she has shown that she has separated herself from the community and no longer thinks of herself as "we," but as "alone, and…

Equality first shows his alienation by having confidence in himself by going to the World Council of Scholars to show them his creation of a new light source. “We are old now, yet we were young this morning, when we carried our glass box through the streets of the City to the home Home of the Scholars. (68)” The quote shows that Equality is confident to go to a place where he is forbidden to do so and he is confident to show the Scholars an invention, although it is a sin for a street…

Along the way, he helps his love Liberty, become an individual too. Without his invention, he would have never thought he could make a change and be different, but in the end he did. He thought it was a sin to write at the beginning of the novel, but as he progresses past communism he focuses on his own independent values. He set an example for all people and let them know that it is okay to be good at something; it is okay to stand out. Equality’s moral assessments change from the beginning to end because he realizes who he genuinely is as a person, and not what others want him to be. It is not a sin for Equality to write, it is a…

Early in the book, Equality reads the words cut into the marble of the palace of the World Council, “We are in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible and forever,” (Rand 19). This quote shows the basic structure of society set by the World Council. It also shows common use of “we” in place of “I”, the lack of individuality in this society, and how the World Council expects to survive forever. Even if it seems that Equality was fighting for his positive cause, when he committed his multiple sins of individuality, he disobeyed this extremely meaningful quote and hurt the very system of the World…

In today’s society, denouncing a leader is more common than it used to be as we see in today's politics and everyday life. By denouncing a leader, society critiques them because they do not think of them as humans with the right policies or beliefs. However, every human on earth thinks differently and sees life from a different viewpoint, making everyone discrete. As a result of criticising a leader, a person is simply stating what they think by censuring their leaders who they do not see eye-to-eye with. Equality 7-2521 reviles the leaders in his community, but not directly to their faces. But is it wrong to reject your commanders in chief, or is it right? Should men and women be able to state why they think their leaders are wrongdoers or…

Equality knows that individualism is amazing. He knows it will lead to great things. “...This god who will grant them joy and peace and pride. This god, this one word: I” (97). This is why he is The Unconquered, because he is not conquered by the society he lives in. He overcame all odds, and, just like Prometheus, brought light back into this world.…

    John Carrol "My Boy Life"

After reading the short story “My Boy Life” which is the memoir of John Carroll, I was from time to time envious of Carroll’s life but also relieved that I was not born in the 1800’s. Born just before the war of 1812 in Upper Canada, Carroll’s life was very simple. His prospective future occupations only consisted of a few and were predetermined from birth. How simple is life when everything is already set in stone? From the age of twelve to seventeen, Carroll worked at a tannery and as a currier. Carroll’s job was associated with his father’s work, his father being a saddler and harness-maker. Only grinding the bark in the tannery, Carroll’s life was consistent and did not require much effort of having to plan out his future. Sadly, much has changed and the current world does not allow me to walk a single, straight-forward path. With so many choices to be made, the world is more complex and much harder to survive in. I spend hours thinking of my future and what I want to be to no avail. To have our futures determined for us sometimes feels much better than having to choose between thousands of different paths we are able to take. Carroll is also not weighed down by expectations to complete schoolwork. In the century that Carroll lived in, education was not held in the highest regard. Children usually helped out with menial work in their house or assisted their father with errands having to do with the trade. This was because living through each and every day was much more troublesome and all the help was needed to keep food on their tables. On the contrary, I struggle with the sheer amount of homework and tests. It also adds to the tension when competing against all my peers for a better mark, which ultimately results in a better occupation. Even in high school, the competition is fierce, increasing every day. Even the most basic jobs are hard to get as jobs are few and there are many over-qualified people who are unemployed. Unlike during Carroll’s life, people…

Everyone lives their life differently. It’s obvious, yet so obscure. People look at others and wonder why they function the way that they do. The truth is, we will never know. Everyone’s story is different. Everyone has a different upbringing, and different values. In The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates by Wes Moore, this concept is brought to light, showing how different two lives can become when they go separate ways; one towards education and its rewards, the other towards money and its corrupted power.…

    Anthem Ayn Rand

Anthem, written by Ayn Rand in 1937, takes place in an ominous future. In a time when society becomes the great “We” and deprives men of their identities, knowledge, and freedom, one man stands alone. Equality 7-2521 had the audacity to go against the rules of the City Council. The story of Equality’s courage is similar to that of the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. When God gave Adam and Eve the Garden of Eden he gave them one simple rule: “Thou shall not eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”…
