Environmental Impacts Of Hurricane Sandy
Hurricanes bring a lot of destruction and death. a specific hurricane event that took place was hurricane Sandy. Hurricane Sandy was a powerful hurricane that took place in 2012 along the east coast. Hurricanes can cause destruction to cities, and death to many people.
First, hurricanes form in warm air, and low air pressure. Usually it is storming and or also raining. The warm ocean water heats the cooler surface low pressure air above the ocean. The Hot air rises till it cools down, after that thunderstorm clouds develop. Next clouds form and the warm air flows upward. During hurricane sandy there was at least 650,000 homes damaged and destroyed during hurricane sandy. the top wind speed during sandy was 89 mph. There was also, at least more than 300,000 business properties affected by the flooding and devastating winds. There were even 250,000 insured vehicles destroyed during hurricane sandy. In the U.S. there was at least 65 billion dollars in damage from the hurricane. Damage to subways and tunnels mad New York the most severely damaged in hurricane sandy. During the storm there was at least 285 people killed, at least 125 in the U.S., also there was not an exact number on how many people were injured. 218,000 people in 1983 were living in flood zone areas in New York, after hurricane sandy in 2012 there was at least 398,000 people that were living in flood zone areas. In order for people to prepare for a hurricane they should gather important supplies. It is important to listen to tvs and radios for updates on the disaster, and if law officials warn you to leave the area; it is best to listen . Also for supplies collect things like food, water, clothes, flashlights, heating fuel, emergency kits, and first aid kits. Also, try getting to higher grounds to try to get away from the storms. During a hurricane it is important to make sure to listen to the radio for updates on the hurricane. People should not go near the water to watch the storm, people who die during the hurricanes get trapped in the flood waters and surges from the storms and also large waves.
