Our Lady of Fatima University Valenzuela, Philippines Our Lady of Fatima University Valenzuela, Philippines ABSTRACT The world is changing so fast that in order for schools and universities to cope with new innovations, they should keep at pace with the tempo of societal changes and technological progress. The schools of today should participate in the educational and social revolution. Thus, the curriculum in Philippine schools today has to be geared to the rapid societal changes and the new responsibilities for the new breed of Filipinos. The three most important sectors of society that give direct input to the improvement of the curriculum are the academe (institutions), the government, and the industries (both public and private companies). Some government institutions, such as the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Department of Education (DepEd), are directly involved in upgrading the curricular programs of learning institutions. They oversee and control the operations of schools, colleges and universities. INTRODUCTION Curriculum is a broad set of experiences that students go through during the entire time they are in school.

    Our country has gone through many changes and development for the past few years. The continuous process made great impacts in the lives of millions of Filipinos. Relatively, the changes have given us advantages not to mention the disadvantages it brought causing downfall to many people. There are numerous questions concerning the issues and problems existing in the Philippine Educational System as to how we can resolve it the best way we could to attain that kind of quality of education we have been searching and longing for. Where do we begin and how do we respond to such? Public schools are the building blocks of our societies. They can be considered our foundational instruments. Although these venues of learning play significant roles, they are unable to provide the best they can, due to their numerous flaws. As I’ve gone through different readings and researches, questions were arising in my mind as to what solutions are applicable in addressing the problems about the quality of education, affordability, budget, mismatch, integration of sex education in the curriculum, R.A. 9710 (Magna Carta for Women) and other concerns which are somehow related to it. I will always stand for what I believe in according to my observations that we have good guidelines and policies on education but what is lacking is the ability to implement such in accordance to the needs of every school, majority of which belong to the public education system. Generally, Philippine Education aims to provide quality and free education both for the elementary and secondary public schools but again this have not been observed and understood well causing it to be a burden most especially to the students and parents. Declining standards in public schools is one of the most controversial education issues today is the continuing decline in student learning standards.…

    Our country is ushering on a new era of educational revolution as it go through reengineering of its new curriculum with the introduction of the K to 12 Enhanced Basic Education Curriculum under the administration of President Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino. In the context of improving the curriculum that is attuned to the call of the times, this paper examines the Revised Basic Education Curriculum (RBEC) used by the public school system of the Philippines in the elementary level today- its strength and weaknesses in terms of the emerging generation and concept of globalization; and towards the achievement of the aim of the education to produce citizens who are able and competent enough to compete under the new international standards in terms of knowledge and skills that is needed in the 21st century. Specifically, this paper offers possible recommendations on how are we going to make the contents of RBEC most enriching and viable for the new generation by identifying the areas by which to be retain or remove suitable for the new K to 12 curriculum. The RBEC curriculum is said to be congested so how are we going to decongest it in a manner that is appropriate to the clientele of the new K to 12 curriculums? This is by taking into consideration the implementation of the new educational scheme that is purposively to prepare our youth for the challenges of the technology-driven society.…

    In an idealistic perspective, general education should be given much emphasis. True enough, even in the tertiary level in the Philippines, general subjects are still taken for the development of wholeness and excellence as human beings. The curriculum of our education system is also cumulative. Therefore, there is progression in learning while harnessing our past knowledge. Idealism in education gave importance to the subjects like philosophy, theology, history, literature and arts. This is evident especially in college. In some universities, the students are mandatory to take philosophy and theology in 12 units each. These subjects invoke the students to be conscious truth seekers as they step out in the real yet materialistic world. Whereas the science subjects, it help the students in dealing with cause and effect relationships. Language, too, is given high importance as our tool for communication. Moreover, critical thinking is highly imposed on the students so that we may not be deceived by our senses. Ideally, all of the subjects should be values-integrated and deals with real-life problems. The education system in the Philippines may not be too concerned with the Macrocosm concept but usually, especially in the Catholic schools, the curriculum is theocentric and there is the emphasis on acting in Christ-like ways, which can be considered as the ideals.…
