Dead Poets Society
Plot Summary
Set in 1959 in Walton Academy, an exclusive private school, dead poet’s society tells the story of English teacher john Keating, and his influence on the lives of his students. Keating encourages the boys to “seize the day” and “to suck out all the marrow of life”. He tells them to resist conformity and express their individuality. The reform the dead poets society and explore their owns hopes and dreams. Eventually though, there are tragic consequences.
Characters
Mr Perry – Strict, authoritative, Manipulative, pushes his son (Neil) to succeed.
Mrs Perry – Submissive and meek, unwilling to stand up to her husband.
Mr Nolan – head master, eventually uses Mr Keating as a scapegoat.
Neil Perry – Bright Boy who embraces Mr Keating’s teachings, longs to act but if forbidden, commits suicide.
Todd Anderson – Shy and nervous student, absorbs Mr Keating’s Teachings and asserts himself in the final scene
Mr John Keating – An idealistic English literature teacher who returns to his alma mater to instruct a new generation of boys and to attempt to impact both his love of poetry and his philosophy of making the most of life, summed up as ‘carpe diem’
Themes in dead poet’s society
Authority – When a person has power to control a particular challenge. e.g who has authority and DPS – Mr and Mrs Perry Who are demanding and manipulative.
Value of role Models – This is when a person (such as Mr Keating) is a role models for a bunch of students in his class. Students have somebody to look up to and obey. Parents are another example of role models.
Pressure of expectations – This is when a person has forced another to do what they want without any doubts. E.g. would be when Mr Perry expects Neil to become a Doctor, however Mr Keating influenced Neil to follow his passion, which lead to the disappointment of Mr Perry.

    Keating led Neil to believe he could have the support of his parents and an acting career. Throughout the movie Keating encourages the boys to 'seize the day', and 'suck the marrow out of life. He endorses Neil's desire to act, despite the fact that it was completely against Neil's fathers' rules and the schools objectives, which, as a former student and teacher he must have known. Going to Welton, and later teaching there Keating would surely have been familiar with the pressures teachers and parents place on students to do well, go to university, and succeed in life; early in the movie, after Neil is told to drop the school paper by his father his friends say "why doesn't he let you do what you want?" and "tell him off Neil", to which Neil retorts "Oh, that's rich. Like you guys tell your parents off, Mr. Future Lawyer and Mr. Future Banker." From these lines it is obvious that the pressure faced by Neil was wide spread in Welton and it was Keating's idealistic views that led him to believe, and in turn, Neil to believe that simply telling his father his views on the matter would instantly make everything alright.
