Hints on pronunciation for foreigners

I take it you already know
Of tough and bough and cough and dough?
Others may stumble but not you
Or hiccough, thorough laugh and through?
Well done: And now you wish perhaps
To learn of these familiar traps:
Beware of heard a dreadful word
That looks like beard and sounds like bird.
And dead: It's said like bed, not bead,
For goodness' sake, don't call it deed!
Watch out for meat and great and threat,
They rhyme with suite and straight and debt.
A moth is not a moth in mother
Nor both in bother, broth in brother.
And here is not a match for there
Nor dear and fear for bear and pear
And then there's does and rose and lose,
Just look them up; and goose and choose.
And cork and work and hard and ward
And font and front and word and sword.
And do and go and thwart and part –
Come, come, I've hardly made a start!
A dreadful language?
Man alive, I'd mastered it when I was five!

Pronunciation
Why is pronunciation necessary?
Language is a means of communication. It has three components: language grammar

Vocabulary or lexis

pronunciation

a) Structures (the patterns that can be seen in these are usually called grammar of the language.
b) Words that convey meaning (vocabulary or lexis).
c)

Sound, stress, and intonation patterns, which combine to make "Pronunciation".

If you communicate only through the written word, you will need only the first two of these components. If, on the other hand, you want to be able to understand spoken language, and to be understood, you’ll need all three components.
Communication is a two-way process:
a) Understanding other people when they speak.
b) Conveying what you want to say so that other people can understand you.
If you have no idea, for instance, that there is an important difference in English between

"s" and "sh" (phonetically written [s] and [ ] and furthermore you can't distinguish between the two, you won't know how to react

Armin Greder’s ‘The Island’ is a picture book published August 2007, explores the negative aspects of belonging through alienation an outsider’s perspective of not belonging. The text uncovers an undesirable experience particularly the migrant experience. It follows a strange man entering a foreign island where he is unwelcomed and quickly judged based on his appearance. The cover of the book shows an intimating barrier around the island, which looks, dark and uninviting. This wall is a metaphor of the attitudes given off by the islanders towards the man, which are also unapproachable and unpleasant. This effect brings about the feelings of alienation experienced by the man, reflecting the negative aspects of belonging to a group or community. Throughout the text the islanders are drawn additionally threatening, as they are large, dark and armed. This is contrasted with the man’s petite frame and lack of clothing leaving him vulnerable and abnormal. Through this use of size and colour a direct link can be made between the man’s inability to belong and his distinctive appearance. This portrays to the audience how much society impacts a person’s experience of belonging or not belonging. Within the text, the islander’s attitude towards the man is prejudice and hostile. As the islanders say “I’m sure he wouldn’t like it here, so far away from his own kind”, negative connotations are revealed in the words “own kind”. This immediately tells the audience that this man is unlike the rest of society, displaying the effect of appearance on a person’s ability to assimilate into a new surrounding.…

The speech I chose was on September 9, 1997 from Queen Elizabeth II after Princess Diana’s death . The speech was more of an informal speech of her willingness to open herself up to the people of England during this great tragedy. The speech was effective in giving the queen a chance to show her compassion during the mourning of Princess Diana and this softened her image to the British people. The speech was something the public would not have been familiar with. The British thought Queen Elizabeth had an estranged relationship with the princess. I didn’t see any research in this speech. I do believe it was pressure that drove the queen to a public speech.…

For this reading aloud assignment, I read aloud to my two younger cousins, Kate who is five and Alec who is three. I loved reading aloud to them because I feel like it brought me closer to them. The books I read to them ranged from books we had all read before to books none of us had ever read. It was a great experience reading aloud the books that we had all read before because we would all say the key phrases together and it would be a bonding experience. It was also fun to read the new books together too because it was an experience we all had together to try and figure out what was going to happen next.…

Phonetics (from the Greek word φωνή, phone = sound/voice) is the study of sounds (voice). It is concerned with the actual properties of speech sounds (phones) as well as those of non-speech sounds, and their production, audition and perception, as opposed to phonology, which operates at the level of sound systems and abstract sound units (such as phonemes and distinctive features). Phonetics deals with the sounds themselves rather than the contexts in which they are used in languages. Discussions of meaning (semantics) therefore do not enter at this level of linguistic analysis.…
