Gender Issues
I. The Procedure of Interview
The Pearl, a novella written by John Steinbeck, illustrates various social issues of Indian people while living under the colonization of Spanish people. These social issues include: family issues, gender issues, social oppression or exploitation, family future plan and fate and determination. Among these matters, we decided to elaborate the gender issues due to the fact that this topic is widespread in the contemporary society. Of course, before study this matter in details, we have to conduct some interviews in some families first in order to figure out some similarities and differences concerning the gender issues.
Below are the processes of our interview of two families concerning this topic.
First, we went to interview Mrs. Pov Nhim’s family. It is located in Khan Chamkamorn, Phnom
Penh, adjacent to Vanda Institute of Accounting. Mrs. Pov Nhim is a grocer. Her family consists of five members, her husband, her two children and her. During the interview, we asked her how her husband and she play role in family leadership, decision making, conflict resolution, property maintaining and the like. In her answers, she mentioned that both her husband and her usually share responsibility and respect each other’s opinions, which is contrasting from Kino’s family in The Pearl.
Second, we decided to interview Mrs. Hong Sekmey, the owner of Baksey Srock, a canteen at
IFL. In her family, there 7 members, her parents, her husband, two children, and her. During the interview, we also asked her how her husband and she play role in family leadership, decision making, conflict resolution, property maintaining and the like. Her answer is very different from the first family owing to the fact that most these workload are responsible

The role each member takes on in a family is usually divided up based on the cultural norms of their society, such as having different gender specific roles. In most Russian families, gender specific roles play huge part in building a structure within a family. The men generally assume the role of the provider and are usually the breadwinners of the family. The men are also seen as the head of the household, as well as a protector, and are often times the ultimate decision maker for every member of the household. On the other side, the women play a completely different role in the family. The women play the part of the nurturers. Due to family being a woman’s priority in Russian culture, women are expected to care for every member of the family. They are responsible for caring for the children, the husband, and the parents of both herself and her husband, regardless of if they hold a job or not.…

Within the Pearl John Steinbeck uses quite a few techniques to show the cause and effect of such misfortune and imperfection. Husbands in the past were known as the “legal” head of household, responsible for its support and it links to the external society, while the wife was the mistress of the hoe, responsible for the day-to-day management of its internal affairs and the care and education of children. (pg. 2019) As times have changed this is no longer the case. Women are just as equal as men (in most areas). Women are facing their fair share outside the home in terms of discrimination. The Pearl and Of Mice and Men, both parables by John Steinbeck, are stories with different themes. Yet despite the differences in the dreams and ambitions of Steinbeck's protagonists, his characters all share the hardship of having the will of society pitted against them. George and Lenny, from Of Mice and Men, travel from place to place, wandering as vagrants and accepting whatever charity available. They hope to create a sanctuary to shield their disillusioned lives. Quite opposite in situation is Kino, the poor American Native from The Pearl. He finds a pearl with the potential to uplift his family from poverty and discrimination. While the lives of the people are quite different, what binds them is that their dreams clash against the fabric of society, inevitably leading to their demise.…

There have been many studies about gender roles in a marriage. The wife seems to do a lot. Women feel sometimes they do too much. Married couples should be able to work together. Sometime when the wife does everything it puts a constraint on the marriage. A marriage not only needs to survive, but thrive. In a marriage a husband and wife should be able share the same roles as needed. Society has a perceived notion of this. Everything today in a marriage should be able to be shifted back and forth as needed. This is all evidence that a marriage should be between two people who are willing to share all family responsibilities. It is a married couple’s responsibility to take control of any major problems they may have prior to marriage if possible.…
