Origin of English Language
The English language started with Germanic tribes that invaded Britain in the 5th century AD. The tribes the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes crossed the North Sea to what we know today as Denmark and Northern Germany. At the time they spoke a Celtic language, most of these speakers where pushed away by invaders into what we now as Wales, Scotland and Ireland. The Angles came from Englaland or Engle and they spoke Englisc.

Three main stages are usually recognized in the history of the development of the English language. Old English, formerly known as Anglo-Saxon, dates from the period 449 to 1066. Middle English dates from 1066 or 1100 to 1500. Modern English dates from about 1500, and is subdivided into Early Modern English, from the period 1500 to 1660, and Late Modern English, from 1660 to the present time. The fist period of the English Language, Old English, is the ancestor of the Modern English spoken today - although it is somewhat different in appearance and sound. Old English, a variant of West Germanic, was spoken by certain Germanic people, (Angles, Saxons, and Jutes), in the regions presently…

The “Engl-“ part of the word goes back to the Angles, a Germanic tribe that invaded and colonized much of Britain during the 5th and 6th centuries. The “-ish” part means “belonging to”: in this case, the language that belonged to the Angles – the “Angle-ish” language. The English language descended directly from the speech of the Anglo-Saxons. English has developed during the course of the past thousand years from old English to Middle English to modern English. (Grolier Academic Encyclopedia, 1988)…
