Chronicle of a Death Foretold Reflective Statement

How was your understanding of cultural and contextual considerations of the work developed through the interactive oral?

I believe that I have gained a considerable amount of more knowledge and understanding about the cultural and contextual consideration of the work after completing the interactive oral. Before starting I had several questions such as ‘Why did the community not try and prevent the death of Santiago Nasar?’ I now feel I can write a sensible answer to this question and tackle other questions I did not fully understand. I believe the community at first appear to be a normal society with their own label in life, for example a job title, however I now feel that these labels are simply a mask for something greater and the whole community is living in hypocrisy.

When the brutal death of Santiago Nasar occurs, the community does nothing about it, but simply watch. This seemed particularly odd to me as for a compact, ‘gossiping’ society, I thought the support would be given. This reveals the realities of life and that people are selfish and inconsiderate. Thus making the community appear a ‘tribe of monsters’ who in the end are all to blame for the death of Santiago.

Another aspect I thought was interesting and broadened my knowledge of the cultural and contextual issues was the ‘broken mirror’ idea whereby the death of Santiago Nasar and trying to unravel the truth is like a broken mirror. The broken mirror effect is also explored when the community does not do anything to stop the murder, making them look like a very dysfunctional community. The broken mirror idea is explored towards the beginning of the novella, foreshadowing the future events and the outcome for Santiago Nasar. Although the discussion was helpful, I now have different questions that are unanswered, for example ‘Did the Vicario Brother’s really kill Santiago Nasar to regain family honour and ‘Is

In Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold, Marquez details the murder of Santiago Nasar at the hands of the Vicario Brothers and the Society’s role in his death. Marquez uses a journalistic and magically realistic style in recounting the events that transpired in the town, using these styles to focus heavily on the societal ideals in the Colombian town. The heavy focus on Catholicism, and the honor that is associated with religion, is the Vicario Brother’s main reason for their murder of Santiago. The townspeople view the Vicario Brother’s as honorable men whose machismo and masculinity justify the killing of Santiago. However,…

Through the use of various techniques and features, composers are able to create images that are distinctively visual and become significantly memorable to their audience. These images are creatively used by composers to communicate significant ideas and thematic concerns more profoundly in their texts. Peter Goldsworthy’s novel ‘Maestro’, and Robert Frost’s poem ‘Mending Walls’, are examples of how composers communicate their purposefully created images to address the significant ideas of their texts.…

The quote “The bravest of individuals is the one who obeys his conscience” was once said by a man named J.F. Clark. Many situations will be faced by many people, but the bravest ones are the ones who listen to their conscience. It takes real courage to stand up for what’s right and no to support what is wrong. The novel To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee, is great example to help prove this point. J.F. Clark’s idea can help be proven true after one examines two things. After reading To Kill a Mockingbird there are many characters that can help support his idea. Atticus and “Boo” Radley are the two characters that best support the quote presented.…

Since I am Brazilian, I decided to choose this movie to watch for this essay topic. When I first saw this movie I was really surprised with it; the storyline and plot left me in shock and I mean that in a good way. The story took place in the rural or “favela” areas in Brazil. In these areas there is a heavy crime rate. This movie depicted true events on how life is in the favelas of Brazil. There is always someone dying almost every day in Brazil because of gangs and money. I always like a film with a good storyline and also I liked how this film was realistic. I liked the acting a lot too, they all did a great job. I could go on an on about how good this movie is, but I’m going to stick to the point and talk about the lifestyle in Brazil. This movie was shot before Brazil’s economic rise, so back then, Brazil was in a recession, the economy was bad and not only that but gangs and crime rate was at it highest in Brazil. You see children in the streets not wearing the cleanest clothing, and majority of them are negativity influenced with the gangs and crimes which make them want to grow up and join gangs and go out to fight. You see very bad and unclean houses; no one really cared about the slum areas. Especially the government in Brazil (back then). I also like how they actually used the actual “City of God’’, which is a slum area in Rio de Janero. The film makers did a very good job with casting too, before I watched the film I read that the actors themselves were actually born in favelas and they knew how the lifestyle is. That means that they could act out their characters easily for this film. I liked how this film gained international popularity; it got to show the world how life was in the slum areas in Brazil. I’ve done some research and I saw that this film was nominated for big awards here in the United States and in other countries too. This made history in Brazil for one of the top grossing Brazilian films in the…

“She was certain that the Vicario brothers were not as eager to carry out the sentence as to find someone who would do them the favor of stopping them” (Márquez, 34). To contribute to this thought relating to the theme, not all scenes seem to be meant to support the journalistic motif. Also, the lack of uncertainty throughout the story with no explanations does not help out with Márquez’s goal of the journalistic theme. For example, “The brothers were brought up to be men. The girls had been reared to get married. They knew how to do screen embroidery, sew by machine, weave bone lace, wash and iron, make artificial flowers and fancy candy, and write engagement announcements” (Márquez, 18). These scenes in the novel seem to be fiction because it does not have anything to do with the fact that Santiago was assassinated. Another example of unexplainable objective, “The parents of Santiago Nasar and Flora Miguel had agreed that they should get married. Santiago Nasar accepted the engagement in the bloom of his adolescence, and he was determined to fulfill it, perhaps because he had the same utilitarian concept of matrimony as his father” (Márquez, 65-66). These quotes do not support the theme nor the plot of the story and are just forced into the story for extra knowledge that is not necessary;…

The representation and characterization of women in Marquez’s “Chronicles of a Death Foretold” provides an understanding of the varied ways in which patriarchy gets constituted, constructed and re-invented in the Latin American context and experience. Marquez’s women characters in the novella reflect not just the extent of women’s internalization of this hierarchy or their exploitation under this unequal gendered system, but his characterization also reveals the diversity of women’s subversions and resistances to this oppressive subjugation.…

There are times in life when even the dullest and most complacent among us feel the need to make a change. It was at such a time in my life that a friend drew my attention to a job she had seen advertised on a Leeds University notice board. It was an unusual job in a little known country. The remuneration was not extravagant, but I estimated it would be sufficient for me to meet my ongoing commitments and save enough to tide me over on my return until I could find another job.…
