Unit 1 Parts of Speech
Every word has a function in every sentence. There are 8 different functions in English usage. Thus, all English words are grammatically divided into 8 different parts, which are called parts of speech. Sometimes they are called “word classes.” They are:
1. Noun A noun is a word or group of words used for referring to a person, thing, place, or quality.
Ex. Birds fly. She is a pretty girl. The man works in the factory. The bird sings sweetly in the tree. There are three new houses in a large city. Louis lives at Paknam but works in Bangkok.
2. Pronoun A pronoun is a noun substitute. In other words, it is a word used instead of a noun for referring to a person or thing that has been mentioned earlier.
Ex. You speak French very fluently. The teacher watched us playing basketball. He asked me to work with him. Susan likes this car. She bought it from Japan.
3. Verb A verb is a word or phrase that shows an action or a state of being.
Ex. Mr. Brown is about to be here soon. These tourists are from the United Kingdom. John had a good time at Paris last week. The teacher gets me to read a book every day.
4. Adjective An adjective is a word or group of words used for modifying or describing a noun or pronoun.
Ex. He is young. He’s got an old car. The beautiful lady is wanted by a young prince. A wise boy is able to answer many difficult questions. Jose was feeling a bit hungry. Raoul always makes his wife disappointed. This river is three hundred miles long. Jeff has bought a new, powerful and expensive car. The standing boy is afraid of the running dog. The man walking along the road saw a car accident.
5. Adverb An adverb is a word or group of words used for modifying or describing a verb, and adjective, another adverb, or a whole sentence. Adverbs in English
