Hello, the topic I have chosen to talk to all of you about today is not only appealing but also particularly relevant to all of us in the room. The term ‘Child Abuse’ may seem straightforward to everyone here, but it isn’t so clear-cut, there are many other ‘sub-topics’ which branch out of child abuse like for example: Bullying and Child Neglection. It is often overlooked and taken as a joke by many people and communities, and this isn’t right at all – the abuse of children is an extremely solemn and serious topic… Child abuse is the physical, sexual or emotional mistreatment or neglect of a child or of children; and it is important for all of us to recognize the dangers, causes and effects of this unpleasant experience … because the miserable truth is that we have no insight into our futures … Who knows? Any one of us could be experiencing this cruelty now or may know people who are in this situation later on in their lives ……

During the course of this essay i will be analysing the spoken language between both the liverpodlian teacher, student interview and the Lancastrian teenagers’ exchange of ideas by commenting on how they both use linguistic devices such as fillers, Standard English, modern slang, power and dominance; how they adapt their language to suit different situations and exploring why they do so.…

    Belonging English Speech

Belonging is a fundamental part for all individuals in which we strive for acceptance and security through others. Understanding is a main part of feeling like you belonging. Individuals belong when they fell connected to others and the world. However to do this they must first have an understanding and acceptance of self which will nourish their sense of belonging. A lack of understanding of the concept of belonging and yourself leads to preventing your identity, relationships, acceptance and ultimately belonging. The concept of the understanding of belonging is shown in my three texts: Swallow the air – Tara Jane Winch, Rabbit Proof Fence – Phillip Noyce and So Much to Tell You – John Marsden.…

THE next summer Alcibiades sailed with twenty ships to Argos and seized the suspected persons still left of the Lacedaemonian faction to the number of three hundred, whom the Athenians forthwith lodged in the neighbouring islands of their empire. The Athenians also made an expedition against the isle of Melos with thirty ships of their own, six Chian, and two Lesbian vessels, sixteen hundred heavy infantry, three hundred archers, and twenty mounted archers from Athens, and about fifteen hundred heavy infantry from the allies and the islanders. The Melians are a colony of Lacedaemon that would not submit to the Athenians like the other islanders, and at first remained neutral and took no part in the struggle, but afterwards upon the Athenians using violence and plundering their territory, assumed an attitude of open hostility. Cleomedes, son of Lycomedes, and Tisias, son of Tisimachus, the generals, encamping in their territory with the above armament, before doing any harm to their land, sent envoys to negotiate. These the Melians did not bring before the people, but bade them state the object of their mission to the magistrates and the few; upon which the Athenian envoys spoke as follows:…

The terms written and spoken have two completely different definitions, the word written means language that can be traced onto paper and read, whereas the word spoken is language that can be expressed through speech and is generally heard once without the use of such things as recordings. Knowledge can be acquired from these two different types of language, in different ways depending on how a person learns and also which area of knowledge the language is being conveyed in. Written and spoken language are expressed in different ways and neither one can be above the other, in a hierarchical scale, in terms of the knowledge being gained. This will be explored through the investigation of which expression of language works best under each area…
