‘English as a medium of instruction (EMI) is a growing global phenomenon.’ Most of the countries, which English are not their first language is being taught as a medium of instruction. Nowadays, English is the language of our globe and increases day by day. The most necessity languages of primary schools, secondary schools, and university level education in most countries. Although, some countries which English are not their first language, are interested in introducing English as a language of science, mathematics, medicine, and technologies. EMI is a way for the universities to be Internationalize in a country at the higher education system. As Professor Ernesto Macaro (2011), director of Oxford university mentioned, “More and more institution across the world are using English to teach academic subjects, spurred on by a desire to internationalize their offer and their academic profile” (as cited in Dearden, 2014). Later on, when the university becomes an international university, the university students and professors will become profession and will make an educational environmental (Dearden, 2014). Furthermore, EMI (English as a medium of instruction) is having another benefit for the students. For instance, students are going to have more opportunities like; finding scholarships for studying abroad, finding a good job with a good salary, increasing the ability of learning a new language. After on the university level will increase and rank as a top university and going to have well profession teachers (Dearden, …show more content…
In some research it clearly shows that those countries which use English language are going to have a good impact on the economic growth which uses EMI (English as a medium of instruction). For instance, according to the first statistical research from the Euro monitor, it shows that some countries such as Bangladesh, Nigeria, and Pakistan which use English as a medium of instruction, developed countries like US and UK have more tendencies to invest in those countries rather than they invest in the other countries like the Cameron and Rwanda. Moreover, this investment is connected to the level of English which they use (Lotbinière, 2011). Also according to Lotbinière (2011) said, “in the three countries, investment from English-speaking countries accounts for between 33% and 41% of total FDI”. And as a result it increases the investment and ranked the country at the top level of economic growth, and it will make the life easier and comfortable (Lotbinière, 2011). So, one of the impacts of English being as a medium language is on economic development, that it enhances earnings of people.
To sum up, the research done on EMI almost all of them have clearly shown that EMI can be a key to educational development in many countries, and also EMI provides more opportunities to have a better job and high salary which is a result of increasing
