The inverted pyramid is a method of organization in which facts are presented in descending order of importance. The writer prioritizes that factual information to be conveyed in the news stories by importance, the most essential pieces of information are offered in the first line, which is called the lead. This usually addresses the five w’s+H (who, what, when, why, where and how). The writer then provides the rest of the information and supporting contextual details in descending order of importance, leaving the least essential material for the very end. This leaves the completed story in the form of an inverted pyramid, with the most important elements or the base of the story on top.
According to C. Roger(2000) One must think of the pyramid as an upside-down triangle, with the narrow tip of less information pointing downwards and the broad base of news worthy details across the top.
The inverted pyramid became a standard form in American newspapers early in the 20th century. In the birth of the inverted pyramid Chip Scanlan states that the invention of the telegraph sparked its development by encouraging reporters to condense material, to reduce costs.
This style of writing was also developed because editors adjusting for space could cut the articles from the bottom and the detail was added as the article enlarged. For example if I write
“Two students were injured when fire swept through their hostel, on June the 10th, the fire is believed to have started from unattended candles.” This is a complete statement but a lot of information has been left out and a lot more detail can be added in succeeding paragraphs. If space is tight an editor can cut out from the bottom and still save the most important details at the top.
This style of writing is helpful to the journalist in that it helps journalist come up with better press release this may get a lot of attention for the press releases.
