Systematic and Random Errors

Objectives:

The objectives of this laboratory were to become familiar with concepts of systematic and random errors, use Microsoft Excel to perform a statistical analysis on measurement data, perform repeated dimensional measurements on a local standard (a gage block) to determine the overall instrument error, Obtain repeated measurements of an extruded rod and report its diameter within a specified probability.

1. Note model numbers and any available serial numbers on your measurement instruments,and record them in your logbook. Also note and record the resolution of each instrument.You will need it in order to calculate the zero-order uncertainty of the device.
2. Select one gage block between 0.1 to 1 inch from the gage block set. The gage block willbe the calibration standard. Note the thickness of the gauge block in your logbook as well as any other identifying information about the gage block (e.g. manufacturer, model, any noticeable damage).
3. Using a digital caliper and a mechanical micrometer, measure the thickness of the gage block. The measurement should be made at the center of the gage block. Repeat the measurement at least forty times using each device, recording the values in your logbook.
Make sure that the number of significant digits reported in your logbook match the resolution of the instruement
1. Measure the diameter of the rod a minimum of forty times at different locations.
2. Again using Microsoft Excel, compute the means and sample variances and standard deviations of your measurements.
