Realizing the Power of Emotional Intelligence

PRIMAL LEADERSHIP
THE SUMMARY IN BRIEF
Great leaders move us. They ignite our passion and inspire the best in us. When we try to explain why they are so effective, we speak of strategy, vision, or powerful ideas. But the reality is much more primal: Great leadership works through the emotions. Humankind’s original leaders earned their place because their leadership was emotionally compelling. In the modern organization this primordial emotional task remains. Leaders must drive the collective emotions in a positive direction and clear the smog created by toxic emotions whether it is on the shop floor or in the boardroom. When leaders drive emotions positively they bring out everyone’s best. When they drive emotions negatively they spawn dissonance, undermining the emotional foundations that let people shine. The key to making primal leadership work to everyone’s advantage lies in the leadership competencies of emotional intelligence; how leaders handle themselves and their relationships. Leaders who exercise primal leadership drive the emotions of those they lead in the right direction.
By Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee

Emotional attributes consist of self control, balance, and stability. “Maintaining self control inspires calm confidence in subordinates and encourages feedback from others. Effective leaders are stable, level headed under pressure and fatigue, and calm in the face of danger. True leaders display the emotions that they want their people to display; they don’t give in to temptation to do what feels good for them”. (Hellenbein & Shinseki. 2004) They truly lead by…

There are always going to be challenges in teams but having a plan that will effectively address the challenges will help to mediate the severity of the challenges. If challenges are left alone and not addressed they can lead to team conflicts, misunderstandings, arguments, poor performance, project failures, resentment, and loss of motivation. As a team it is in its best interest to clearly set guidelines that will mitigate problems and reduce the risk of challenges the team may face. Before the team can set guidelines that address challenges that the majority of teams face the team must clearly define challenges that may lead to bigger problems within the team.…

In life, the concept of leadership is brought up very often whether it is in childhood, adolescence, or adulthood. It is an extremely valuable and rare personality to possess as not many people are born leaders. By having experience as a leader, one gets separated from the rest of society from strength. There are two main types of leadership: authoritative leadership and collaborative leadership. However, authoritative leadership is more effective than collaborative leadership because the all power stays with somebody that is qualified and it is more efficient. Ruling by fear solidifies power in one’s hands and…

“What do effective leaders do to remain effective?” was a question that I proposed to my Leadership Application Program Speakers Round Table Class. In response I received a number of answers from personality traits to emotional intelligence. Leadership is a word that can be defined in many different ways. In the article “Leadership That Gets Results” they take the time and breakdown the six different steps of leadership, the six styles are coercive, authoritative, affiliative, democratic, pacesetting and coaching. The late David McClelland, a noted Harvard University psychologist, found that leaders with strengths in a critical mass of six or more emotional intelligence competencies were far more effective than peers who lacked such strengths.…

Exceptional leaders often have one thing in common, according to Daniel Goleman. In addition to the traditional requirements for success -- talent, a strong work ethic and ambition, for instance -- they possess a high degree of emotional intelligence. In chapter 4, I learnt about the core competencies involved in emotional intelligence which are critical to manage one’s emotions for a successful professional and personal life.…
