Exploring Literature

Literature provides the opportunity for authors to use words to describe a story, whether true or fiction. The reader is provided details to have an imaginary movie playing out in their mind while reading the story. The reader is connected with the characters, the environment, and the emotion experienced during the story. In this essay, I will be utilizing the formalist approach to review a story and further explore literature. The formalist approach is used to analyze a stories development and its form. I will review many question outlined in my academic materials by Clugston, such as “what makes the setting so memorable in the story, why was the plot intriguing and did surprise occur, how were the characters described, developed? Was figurative language used to create a mood, to reveal theme and what point of view was used during the story? In what ways do literary conventions and forms contribute to its appeal?” (Clugston, 2010). In reading the Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” (Chopin, 1894), the author utilized the third person point of view with a narrator. The setting that made this story or memorable was that Mrs. Mallard was just informed that her husband had died. Since she had a heart condition, they approached the delivery of the tragic news with extreme caution. Her sister delivered the news and Mrs. Mallard was dealing with the emotional pain from losing him. She locked herself in her room and could not stop crying. This plot was intriguing as it described a common theme that we can all relate to, death. The topic is relatable since most of us (at one point or another) have dealt with the loss of a loved one and the sadness experienced during this time. However, there was a surprise in the story that really captivated my attention and interest. As expected, Mrs. Mallard experienced an overwhelming amount of emotional pain; she also cried and felt really sad he was gone.

The author has achieved the purpose of this novel. The text is conveyed effectively to the reader. The colloquial style contains a tone that varies between disgust and bitterness; which strongly enhances our understanding of the novel. The narrative structure is presented as a flashback; requiring the reader to interpret the text based on their knowledge. The writing techniques are also used cleverly. The author describes the man characters psychological breakdown indirectly, yet the reader still recognises the breakdown. This is because the author uses two distinctive writing techniques.…

The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin captured my attention because it explained the ironic ways Mrs. Mallard coped with the news of her husband’s death. I found it further appealing Kate Chopin, the author, was a widow. This lead me believe that there could have been some kind of connection between the author and the main character. The formalist approach is one of the best analytical approaches to use when analyizing this piece of literature.…
