1.0 Introduction

The economy of the British Isles has not escaped the brunt of the global recession and many predict a challenging future. At a time when every individual is feeling the pinch, it is the perfect opportunity to educate the public, about energy, energy conservation in the home and how this can reduce electricity and heating bills. For this reason the theme of the course I intend to outline will be specifically targeting Mr Joe Bloggs or Joe the plumber for our American friends.

The title of the course would be “A Householders Guide to Energy and Energy Saving Techniques”. The lectures would focus on simple changes in attitude and lifelong habits that if altered, can reduce the cost of living without having to spend a fortune.

The course would firstly introduce the individual to a simplistic overview of energy and how it is produced. This would be followed by pointing out the main areas of high energy consumption in a dwelling and giving tips on how to reduce the amount of electricity and heat being wasted. The benefits to the environment, climate change and carbon reduction would also be discussed. The person would then be instructed on how to carry out a simple survey of their own home, so they can relate the information they have been given, to their own circumstances. Finally the individual would be asked to compare a weekly, and then quarterly period after changes

    The United States leaves a huge carbon footprint through energy use, this can be reduced by: building energy efficient homes, reducing motor vehicle use, and recycling more. Some energy related activities were the lowering energy costs in the home. People sometimes think this to be hard but here are some good steps to follow to make it seem it easier. Reset the water heater thermostat, people do not always realize that most water heaters heat water to a set temperature and then hold it there, meaning that throughout the day and night the water heater cycles on and off, just maintaining that already set temperature. If we were to go the water heater and lower the setting a few degrees it can often save half as much energy and the chances are turning down the temperature won’t even be noticeable to most members of the family. Another way to lower energy costs in the home is with a programmable thermostat for heating the home. Just like the water heater maintains a set temperature even when it is not being used a thermostat does the exact same thing for your entire home. When we are just letting it cool off (or warm up) when there is no one awake can save energy and money as well. By letting the house cool on its own and not turning up the thermostat this can save you money. This change will usually pay for itself in around three years. We also have attic and wall insulation where there is a difference between the indoor and outdoor temperate, the more energy this will take to maintain a temperature of comfort in our homes. By adding insulation between the indoors and the outdoors we are reducing the energy demand. This of course depends on where you live, because the savings from insulating your walls and attic could almost double the savings. This will pay back in 3 ½ years to 12 years…

    The future of tree house hotels is in the process of becoming even more and more successful. In April 2006, a team of trained individuals put together their thoughts and ideas for a more efficient tree house hotel not only to help the environment, but as well as people and their stay at the hotel. In The Telegraph Newspaper, an article titled “Eco tree houses, the homes of the future” described the uprising tree house hotels as “the timber-framed, 4-story Sigma house, designed by architects PTP and built by the Stewart Milne Group, which has been awarded 5 stars” (Eccleston, 2007). The Stewart Milne Group has been working constantly on this project to make the future of the tree house hotels very successful, and by 2012 these hotels well be making their way to a more eco-friendly environment and saving more money. According to the design team, they have already considered many ways to help enhance the facility and better the water and supply system, as well as the energy efficiency that is being used. As stated in the article from The Telegraph Newspaper, “living tree houses would eliminate wasted energy used in harvesting wood for lumber, hauling and cutting lumber, and they would be carbon neutral” (Eccleston, 2007). Their main focus to improve these hotels is to eliminate wasted energy and make them carbon-free. Also included in the article “Eco tree houses, the homes of the future” are a few of the future designs of these tree house hotels, which are described as follows: “100% renewable energy heating hot water from solar thermal panels and by generating electricity from roof mounted turbines and photovoltaic panels, a ‘grey water’ recycling system from bath, shower and basins for use in flushing toilets and rainwater collection on the roof, all timber from sustainable sources and the design and construction delivering a claimed 100% reduction in CO2 emissions over standard building regulations, a heat sensor that opens and closes even temperature flow, air…
