This report tries to set light to the procedures, some of modern technique and some of traditional craftsmanship, that can help improve the energy balance of a heritage building. This domain is growing every day and more attention is paid to a proper restoration of the traditional buildings in terms of energy efficiency.
This research question: What are the current technical measures taken in the rehabilitation process of historical buildings in Europe in order to help energy efficiency? tried to be answered, while also trying to point differences between regular renovation of a building in terms or energy efficiency and a restoration of a traditional building. Data collection and site visits have been done as well as interviews with several architects in order to gather expert opinion and customised recommendations for each area of interest.
Many of the findings pointed that the buildings need a tailored approach when new project for implementing energy efficiency measures are started. Matters like number of people living/using the buildings, size, age, scope of buildings as well as budget are key factors when deciding the energy improvements that can be used. Also, a major key factor is the climate in which the building is situated in, since this will reveal the necessities of the building and specific problems or highest priorities in term of energy efficiency.

    Energy usage for the heating and cooling the building is the greatest energy cost for a single family home. The fabrication of exterior walls provides an opportunity for lowering energy cost. According to Dan Chiras, “Heating and cooling the interior of our homes consumes the largest portion of residential energy--about 44 percent” (Chiras, 2008). The framing of a wall is most often the simplest type where the minimum insulation allowed by present building codes is utilized. This type of wall structure is of 2 X 6” wood construction with R-22 batt type insulation. Where a building is intended to be of greater operating efficiency there are several methods of fabricating the walls where the R-value of the wall far surpasses the code minimum.     The future of tree house hotels is in the process of becoming even more and more successful. In April 2006, a team of trained individuals put together their thoughts and ideas for a more efficient tree house hotel not only to help the environment, but as well as people and their stay at the hotel. In The Telegraph Newspaper, an article titled “Eco tree houses, the homes of the future” described the uprising tree house hotels as “the timber-framed, 4-story Sigma house, designed by architects PTP and built by the Stewart Milne Group, which has been awarded 5 stars” (Eccleston, 2007). The Stewart Milne Group has been working constantly on this project to make the future of the tree house hotels very successful, and by 2012 these hotels well be making their way to a more eco-friendly environment and saving more money. According to the design team, they have already considered many ways to help enhance the facility and better the water and supply system, as well as the energy efficiency that is being used. As stated in the article from The Telegraph Newspaper, “living tree houses would eliminate wasted energy used in harvesting wood for lumber, hauling and cutting lumber, and they would be carbon neutral” (Eccleston, 2007). Their main focus to improve these hotels is to eliminate wasted energy and make them carbon-free. Also included in the article “Eco tree houses, the homes of the future” are a few of the future designs of these tree house hotels, which are described as follows: “100% renewable energy heating hot water from solar thermal panels and by generating electricity from roof mounted turbines and photovoltaic panels, a ‘grey water’ recycling system from bath, shower and basins for use in flushing toilets and rainwater collection on the roof, all timber from sustainable sources and the design and construction delivering a claimed 100% reduction in CO2 emissions over standard building regulations, a heat sensor that opens and closes even temperature flow, air…
