Energy Crisis in Pakistan

‘Crisis’ has been coined by a Greek word which means ‘decisive moment’. Crisis is declared when something has gone to a level where an action must be taken to avoid complete disaster or breakdown. ‘Energy Crisis’ happens due to several reasons, some of which are: misallocation of resources, incompetency of exploration sector, increasing price of oil in international market, power wastage, less dams, little deployment of unconventional energy resources, etc.
Energy production of any country is the measure of its economy. No country can achieve high economic growth without producing sufficient energy. Production of energy reflects industrial output, agricultural output, transportation, etc. Electricity load shedding in Pakistan is alarming. When energy supply of an industry is restricted, its output decreases and cost of production increases due to which many industries shut down leaving labour unemployed. The upsurge of inflation is due to energy shortage in Pakistan. Number of people living below poverty line is increasing due to unemployment and inflation, both of which are by-products of energy crisis.
As the high production cost decreases rate of output, the exports of Pakistan are continuously declining. Our trade deficit is increasing which eventually will result in unstable economy. Like industry, agriculture is heavily dependant upon electricity and oil. Our crop production has failed to achieve its target and this failure led to the creation of another crisis, which is ‘Flour Crisis’. Increase in the prices, and availability of oil and natural gas directly affects transport. Expensive commercial transport further increases cost of a product which decreases ‘purchasing capacity’ of people, which means depreciation of national currency.
Severe load shedding, increasing trade deficit, high inflation, unemployment, depreciation of rupee, etc. are reducing the living standards of people in Pakistan. At this critical stage, we

The world today faces an energy crisis. The world is dependent on certain natural resources like oil and natural gas that are quickly depleting. These resources are being imported from countries that have the ability to set higher prices due to demand (Nef 1977). Because of this, the world faces a great recession, and like Britain in the second half of the 16th century, we need to find alternative sources of energy. Britain found itself in an energy crisis and was on the brink of a recession however they were able to exploit a new means of energy and revitalize their country and situation. Pakistan‟s economic growth came to a near halt at around 2.00 per cent in fiscal year 2009, not only as a result of the global financial crisis, but also because of internal issues. These included a war on terror launched by security forces in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and the Federally Administrated Tribal Areas (FATA) bordering on Afghanistan, and the resultant displacement of some three million people from their homes. Both the war on terror and the rehabilitation of the internally displaced persons (IDPs) consumed a big chunk of the government‟s financial resources, thus widening the fiscal deficit and halting economic growth. Pakistan has…

For the past few years Pakistan has been following the technique of assessment of domestic oil value against the international oil value on a fortnight basis. About 85% of the oil required for domestic uses in Pakistan is imported. Back in the year 2004 various subsidies were given by the government on the oil price as an attempt to protect the citizens from the prospective record fuel costs. It was also an attempt to curb the rate of inflation prevalent in the country. Financing these subsidies, which by the way are considered a birthright by the population of these countries, is a major burden for an emerging economy. For instance according to the estimate of various prominent economists and analysts, that subsidy was costing Pakistan a whooping 14.5 billion rupees per month. This amounted to around $232 million per month. Not surprisingly as a result the Pakistani government was under major financial stress. Although it has to be acknowledged that recent increases in the industry's cost of production were largely due to rise in "other" input costs. Industry is paying more for oil and other imported raw materials and capital goods in line with rising international prices and utilities and transportation costs, and wage costs have risen due to the rise in minimum wages.…
