TMA03 Covering Block 3

Question 1

(a) An impactor mass of 45 kg is used to represent the weight of child reasonably regarded to be involved in an accident with glass or plastics.

(b) The BS standards gives the manufacturers a clear set of standards that their products need to achieve to be safe and fit for the purpose that they have been designed for. It also gives the purchaser the expectation that the item has reached the standards set down by the BSI and will be a safe for the expected life of the item.

(c) (i) The energy on impact is calculated by using the following equations:

Potential Energy (PE) = mass x gravity x height

This gives the potential energy at the height when the ball is held at the start of the test. This can be used as a check to for the Kinetic energy (KE) equation as the law of energy conversation states that energy may neither be created nor destroyed. Therefore the sum of all the energies in the system is a constant. So the PE when the ball is held at height will be the same as the KE just before the impact with the glass.

To calculate the KE use the equation

KE = ½mv2

(ii)

Using the KE equation from question (i)

KE = ½mv2

u = initial velocity
v = final velocity
a = acceleration
s = distance

Insert the constants of

Mass = 45kg

To calculate the v2 using the equation

v2 = u2 + 2 x a x s

For test 1

KE = ½mv2

For the v2

v2 = 02 + 2 x 9.8 x 305

Gives 5978

Insert in to KE = ½mv2 to give

KE = ½ x 45 x 5978

To give 134505 = 135J to 3 sf

To check use PE = mgh

45 x 9.8 x 305 = 134505

Round up to 3 sf to give 135 J

    Kinetic energy is when the object, the egg in this case, is in motion. On the other hand potential energy is when the object, again the egg in this case, Potential energy is the stored energy of an object, such as gravitational potential energy which depends on the mass and the height the object is at. In the egg drop we were hoping that the Eggpollo 6 would absorb the energy of impact, which would transfer the energy away from the egg and cause the Eggpollo 6 to protect the egg from breaking. The straws helped absorb the impact by bending. The toothpicks helped absorb the impact by stopping the straws from bending too much stopping the Eggpollo 6 from compressing too much. If I could do the drop again I would make the project as bare as possible for the mass requirement. But not so bare that there is almost no protection. I would put an egg in a small chamber just big enough for the egg to fit in made of straws and toothpicks in the straws hot glued the openings on both side of the straws then at one end of the chamber put straws on the sides going out at as close you can get to a 45° angle. At the end of the straws put a box on it at hot glue it to the…

    Introduction: When objects move, they have momentum. Momentum, p, is simply the product of an object’s mass (kg) and its velocity (m/s). The unit for momentum, p, is kgm/s. During a collision, an object’s momentum can be transferred to impulse, which is the product of force (N) and time (s) over which the force acts. This allows us to write the momentum-impulse theorem:…

    Energy may be either potential or kinetic. Potential energy (PE) is energy stored and ready for use. A car stopped at the top of a hill and a water balloon dangling out of an upstairs window have potential energy. Potential energy is measured by the amount of work the object can perform. The other form of energy is kinetic energy (KE). Kinetic energy is the energy of motion. A car rolling downhill and a water balloon falling towards its target have kinetic energy. Because of its greater mass, a falling car has more kinetic energy than a falling water balloon. Similarly, because of its greater velocity, as water balloon that is thrown down will have more kinetic energy than one that is simply dropped from the same height. As these examples show, potential energy can become kinetic energy. Kinetic energy can also be transferred from one object to another: imagine a car or the water balloon striking a ping pong ball and sending it flying. Recall also that kinetic energy comes in six forms - chemical, electrical, radiant, mechanical, nuclear, and thermal- and that each of these forms can be converted into any of the other forms. For example, a battery converts chemical energy into electricity, and a light bulb converts electricity into light and heat.…

    There is a positive correlation between the height at which the tennis ball was dropped and the amount of energy that it held. This energy was measured through the amount of gravitational potential energy that the tennis ball had before it was dropped, and by the amount of work it had done when displacing the sand. As shown in Table 2, when the tennis ball was dropped at a height of 1 meter, it only possessed a potential energy of 0.569 J. When dropped from 5.5 meters, it held a potential energy of 3.217 J. This shows a positive correlation between the height of the drop and the amount of potential energy the tennis ball had. Also, shown in Graph 1’s trend line, is a positive correlation between the two variables. Table 2 shows the diameter…

    Standards help social care workers so they work in the same level as other social care workers. It helps standardised the service they are giving. By having a standard, they can always reflect with it and achieve the same standardised level. You should know the standards to understand what is expected of you as a health and social care worker, and then you should reflect to ensure you are meeting these standards. These would be the CQC and your code of practice which are found in the managers office. All codes of practice should be adhered to at all times.…

    Bouncy Ball Experiment

    I predict that the higher I drop the ball from the higher it will rebound up, because it will have more gravitational potential energy the higher dropped from. As it is dropped the ball will have kinetic energy, and then when it hits the ground changes to heat and sound energy, and kinetic as it rebounds back up. The higher up the ball is dropped from the more gravitational potential, more kinetic energy on the way down and therefore more sound heat and kinetic energy when hitting the ground. The ball will bounce higher the higher dropped from as the energy has to go somewhere! The ball 's efficiency (what fraction of the energy the ball has left after being dropped), will when dropped from a small height i.e. 25cm, be a high percentage, because air resistance won 't affect the ball. As the height dropped from increases the ball will bounce higher but the amount it increases by will get less. (See graph) This is because as the ball is dropped from a higher height the amount of kinetic energy on the way down is greater, this could make the ball reach terminal velocity, but even if it does not air resistance will affect it more. The ball will reach a certain height where it reaches terminal velocity on the way down and will rebound up as high as it if it was dropped from a higher height.…
