Mounting the tower and looking carefully, Zhuge Liang said to them: please don’t be panic. I can make Sima Yi retreat by using ideas. So Zhuge Liang let soldiers hide all the flags and stand still. Also, Zhuge Liang called the soldiers to open four gates, each gate looked by 20 soldiers who were disguised as people look, watering and sweeping the street. Zhuge Liang, putting on crane cloak and to wearing high light, sat on the tower and played the harp, with two little servant sanding by. Vanguard of Sima Yi arrived at the city and didn’t dare to go into the city when seeing the momentum. So they returned to the city quickly and reported the situation to Sima Yi. After hearing that, Sima Yi said with smile: how was it possible? Then, he rode his own horse to see what happened. Not far from the city, he exactly saw Zhuge Liang sitting on the tower and playing the harp. To his left, there is a nunnery holding the sword; to his right, there is also a page boy holding a horsetail whisk. Inside and outside the gate, there are more than 20 people bowing to sweep, self-assured and supercilious. Sima Yi said to himself: Zhuge Liang never adventure in his whole life. The soldiers hooted and hollered at the sight as if it were entertainment. Ahmeya's tear filled eyes blurred her vision as she searched for the people of her longhouse. Off to the side, by the stream where they washed clothes, she saw an old woman crouching down and Tamataunee, her brave husband, standing over her. A horse rider charged at them both, swinging his saber in the air above his head. Ahmeya watched in horror, hugging her baby as the rider sliced at Tamataunee. He managed to duck the saber and raised his tomahawk to fight back, but before he could strike a blow at his attacker, another man using a long rifle, shot Tamataunee. He fell to his knees, looked up at the saber-carrying horseman, who then kicked him in the head. It snapped backwards and he fell to the ground with a thud. Ahmeya could now see the old woman was her beloved Mahonoy. She raised her arms as if pleading with the rider and was quickly run through with the already bloodied…

In Jin’s book, Lin’s wife, Shuyu, suffered two decades for Lin and Manna’s affair. Shuyu’s martial agony deeply reflected the sadness of those countrywomen in the feudal society of China. Shuyu was raised to be obedient in all aspects. Her bound feet feature was the great symbolization of feudalism in China. Nurses sneered at Shuyu’s bound feet when she visited the hospital in the city; however, she did not feel ashamed of her difference. She frankly informed those nurses that bound-feet custom was called “Golden Lotus,” and her bound feet were “like a treasure” (206). Although Shuyu was proud of her bound feet, she never knew that this feudal custom was one of the major reasons her husband disliked her and spent eighteen years to divorce…

In another words, witnesses like Fu Gui and his fellows see things historians can not find in any document. Both books describe what happened in Civil War, when Chiang Kai-shek assigned "non-Manchurians to key posts…in Heilongjiang, Jilin and Liaoning" (Spence 495). Many officials he assigned "abused their powers" (Spence 495) and forced random people from the streets into troops. Yet the historical description stopped here, providing only a general frame of Civil War. Yu 's novel actively adds detailed images, psychological activities, and missing emotions into the historical contexts. Fu Gui was caught and sent to the front fighting against the Liberation Army. Ironically, Fu Gui and most soldiers around him did not lift their guns and fight fiercely for the unification of China. Instead, they abandoned their weapons and "piled onto the bags of rice" whenever "a plane appeared overhead" (66). After seeing the wounded soldiers being abandoned and screaming in "a combination of crying and laughter", Fu Gui and his companies questioned angrily and bitterly, "how we were supposed to fight this battle" (72). Under such circumstances, Nationalist soldiers had neither the willingness nor the energy to fight. The tiredness and desperation of soldiers directly contributed to the defeat of the Nationalist Army. Fu Gui 's experience teaches the readers something not presented in textbooks: Reading pure historic contexts is 'safer ' because readers do not need to strive for objectivity when the emotions of characters and individual experiences sway them into one way or the other. Readers catch more than numbers, facts and results in witnesses ' accounts. In the study of history, the results themselves are important, but the physical and mental conditions that lead to these results are also…
