Empathy Story

It was a dark night in the midst of a gloomy winter, when two hearts broke.

It was 18th century in Africa and it was a time of revolution, there was a small village out side of the town called Jacksbury where two young men lived, one white and the other black. There names were Jayden and Josh.

Jayden was the more fortunate as his father was a wealthy farmer unlike josh’s father who worked in a factory. Josh and his Dad were both born in England but moved to Africa later in the 18th century, they moved to Africa with the army as his dad was Major but decided to retire from the army before the great fight with the Red Army and then settled in Africa.

At the age of 5 they both met in park by playing football and them two were in the same team , since that day they became best friend but ‘what did they know’ that it was the start of something great.

“The overseers wore dazzling white shirts and broad shadowy hats. The oiled barrels of their shotguns flashed in the sunlight. Their faces in memory are utterly blank.” Black and White men are the symbol of ethnic abhorrence. “The prisoners wore dingy gray-and-black zebra suits, heavy as canvas, sodden with sweat. Hatless, stooped, they chopped weeds in the fierce heat, row after row, breathing the acrid dust of boll-weevil poison.” The narrator expresses the unforgiving situations the slaves worked in; they didn’t even have a choice which is the saddest part. Yet the slave masters lived a different elegant life.…

The life in the camps was not great. The camps were full of disease and malnutrition was present. The projects they work was known as the “drudgework” of war. They raised fortifications, cooked meals, and laid railroad track. The life was difficult but the opportunity was freedom. With slaves coming up to the north, a dilemma arose with the Union Army on what to do with the slaves but was resolved by the First Confiscation Act. In the document “General Benjamin F Butler reacts to self-emancipating slaves, 1861”, he states that without slaves the southern plantations will be behind for a couple weeks and the plantation owners will need to find new people to carry out these jobs. Butler is explaining with this law the north can gain an advantage against the south. The textbook and this primary document explain in more detail about slaves coming from the south and are placed in “contraband camps” in the north. The text gives more detail on the life in the camps and the document provides more detail on the thoughts of the General in the Union…

This passage towards the end reveals a storyteller telling the tale of slaves working through rugged conditions on a plantation. Nevertheless, they would soon go on to glory as some of which couldn’t stand the unbearable circumstances that were forced upon them. In addition, the storyteller described a few situations that slaves had to endure throughout their time spent on the plantation’s cotton field such as: nurturing an infant while proceeding in harsh labor and confliction between slave and slave owners.…

What was slavery in America for blacks? When an individual hears or reads this question, what goes through this persons’ mind? For many, like myself, they immediately think of bad conditions, beatings, ripping people from their homeland and racism. Three major questions come to mind when I think of slavery in America, why did it exist? What was slavery like? And lastly, what did it do to America? Through my personal readings I have come to understand these three questions and the vast answers that follow them.…

Some people have to work tremendously hard to get by in life while others seem to have everything handed to them. James Healy, born as a slave, came from nothing. To make things more confusing, James was mixed race and didn’t look like either his white Irish father or his mulatto mother. Even though he was ¾ Irish because James had some “black blood” he was considered black, and a slave due to the one drop rule in Georgia (anyone with 1 drop of black blood, was black) (blackpast.org). “The rigidity of racial distinctions had to be maintained as much as possible. The idea that a person might be able to cross over from one race to another was out of the question....The distinction between "white blood" and "black blood" came to seem so fundamental…
