Emotion-Focused Coping Strategies: A Personal Analysis
Throughout my life, I have experienced many situations were I used problem-focused and emotion-focused coping strategies. According to Hutchison (2015), "Problem-focused coping is when an individual changes the situation by acting on the environment" (p.162). A couple days ago, I was so overwhelmed of how much homework was coming up throughout the next couple weeks, so by using problem-focused coping mechanism I began writing down what day I need to finish which homework. This skill helped me become more focused on school, and reduced my stress levels. However, a couple years ago I was faced with the death of my grandmother, which I kept denying and avoiding all my loved ones. This emotional stressor changed my actions towards the ones I

    I want to handle stress in a positive manner and not negatively. It is bad to have negative thoughts while handling stress, for it can cause bad thoughts, such as self harm and suicide. From personal experience, there was a time in which I handled the stress I had in a poor manner. Senior year, I was burdened from the stress of having to deal with my brother who was ill in the hospital, my father with an income that could not help support the family, and a mother who was not understanding of the situation we were going through and blame the entire family’s problems on me. I felt as if my world was crumbling apart and truly believed that I was the cause to the family’s problems. This stress burdened me so much I simply broke. I skipped school and cried my eyes out and let my grades in school drop. I dealt with this stress similarly to Charlie, in which I tried to avoid the problem and not tell anyone. With this, I only realized that it was not going to help the situation and it could not improve. It was not until I went to seek professional help from the school therapist to help me deal with my stress.     As I deeply contemplated what I would like about Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the concept of corrective emotional experience came to my mind. In the process of EFT treatment, therapist helps the couple to get in touch with their emotions, understand what it is that they need from their partners, and regulate their emotions to send clear and coherent emotional signals to their partner. Specifically, the couple learns not only to understand their own superficial and deep-seated emotions, needs, and interactional cycle in Stage 1 (de-escalation), but also to restructure their negative interaction and create a positive dance so they can move closer. And, I thought that, for many couples in the therapy room, this might be their first emotional experience that is secure and loving.
