For this assignment I will be explaining how five life factors may have an impact on the physical, intellectual, language, emotional and social development of Yvette. The five life factors are: Genetic, biological, environmental, socio- economic and lifestyle. In this assignment I will also be discussing the nature-nurture debate in relation to the development of Yvette and how nature and nurture may affect the physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of two stages of the development of Yvette.
Genetic
Genetic factors are inherited from generation to generation Genetic factors are used to analyse how a disease progresses through a family by looking at if there is a specific genetic composition to the disease. Down's syndrome is a genetic chromosome problem. Someone with Down's syndrome has an extra copy of chromosome twenty one in their cells. All people with Down's syndrome have a various degree of learning disabilities. They are also at increased risk of having other medical problems such as heart problems, speech problems and weight problems. Down's syndrome may be detected prenatally or postnatally. It cannot be cured but treatment and support can help someone with Down's syndrome to lead an active life.
Yvette was born with Down’s syndrome and it would have been inherited by her mum. There are many physical defects that may affect an individual with Down’s syndrome. The most common defects of Down’s syndrome are:
Flat facial features, with a small nose
Small, abnormally shaped ears
Upward slant to the eyes
Enlarged tongue
Low muscle tone
Extra space between the big toe and the second toe
People with Down syndrome often experience a gradual deterioration in their cognitive ability as they age, usually starting around age fifty plus. Down syndrome is also associated with an increased risk of developing Alzheimer disease. When Yvette was born she was kept in a hospital until she was nine years old and her mother found it hard to meet

    Down syndrome is a genetic disorder, often referred to as trisomy 21 because the cells for chromosome 21 are trisomic, meaning an individual with Down syndrome would have 47 chromosomes in all of their body cells. Down syndrome is a genetic disorder, there are 3 different types of chromosomal changes which can lead to Down syndrome: complete trisomy 21, whereby the nondisjunction occurs during the formation of the egg or sperm cells meaning all body cells will have 47 chromosomes. This is the most common causality of Down syndrome, accounting for 95%. The second being mosaic trisomy 21, this occurs in early development after fertilisation of the egg cell. In this case most of the body cells have 47 chromosomes but not all. This is rarer and only accounts for 1%. The frequency of Down syndrome is seen to correlate with the age of the mother.     Down syndrome is categorized as a chromosomal disorder, (but may sometimes be known as a developmental disorder.)
