Mobile e-commerce, commonly referred to as m-commerce, is the ability to purchase goods anywhere through a wireless Internet-enabled device. Current e-commerce providers, engaged through mobile devices, will find advantage in developing unique m-commerce value propositions founded upon the specific dimensions of ubiquity, convenience, localization, and personalization. A consumer orientation that provides value-for-time functions to create a new value curve may achieve a competitive advantage over traditional e-commerce models replicated for mobile business. Therefore, this paper investigates the value propositions, that engender a productive mobile e-commerce strategy to provide recommendations for managerial decision-making in this emerging wireless environment. Zorrille Ltd (Ecommerce article) explained how the field of wireless technology is tremendously increasing.     In April 2008 Joe Levy, the director of carrier marketing for the technology start-up Ontela, was considering how to position the company’s first offering, PicDeck. Ontela’s PicDeck was a technology service that allowed wireless subscribers to seamlessly transfer pictures from their mobile devices to their computers, email inbox, and other networking devices and services (see Exhibit 1). The service had been well received in the media. An article in Telephony magazine lauded the service as “helping bridge the gap between phone and PC.”1 Ontela’s technology offered value to end users (wireless subscribers) by providing a more convenient mobile imaging experience. This in turn was expected to increase sales of highmargin data services for Ontela’s wireless carriers, its direct customers. By encouraging consumers to transfer pictures from their mobile devices, this new service was expected to increase consumer use of wireless carrier services. Ontela sold its technology to wireless carriers, who were responsible for branding and pricing the service and marketing it to wireless subscribers. These subscribers paid a monthly fee to carriers for the PicDeck service, and Ontela received a portion of this subscription revenue. To develop a compelling positioning strategy for the PicDeck service, Levy needed to identify target segments within the wireless customer base. He faced several major questions: What was the best way to determine the appropriate target audience? Which segment(s) would provide the biggest opportunity for both Ontela and the carriers? How could he balance the needs of subscribers with the carrier’s goals of decreasing churn and increasing average revenue per user (ARPU)? As Levy thought about these questions, he knew that his company’s future depended on his ability to answer them.…

    Abstract Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine factors affecting consumers’ acceptance of mobile marketing in China. Design/methodology/approach – The authors draw on technology acceptance and uses and gratifications theories to develop a conceptual model of antecedent factors (including risk acceptance related to the mobile platform and personal attachment related to mobile devices) and marketing-related and value-based mobile activity related to the acceptance of mobile marketing practice. The conceptual model is tested using data collected among Chinese youth consumers. Findings – The results confirm the importance of risk acceptance and personal attachment in influencing mobile marketing acceptance, and support the “priming” effect of regular mobile phone usage on orienting consumers toward accepting mobile marketing initiatives. Research limitations/implications – The study is limited to a specific sample of youth consumers in China. The findings illustrate the role of antecedent factors – including personal attachment and risk acceptance – related to acceptance of mobile marketing in the Chinese market and they emphasize the role of marketing-related and value-based mobile activity in mediating the relationships between antecedent factors and mobile marketing acceptance. Practical implications – The findings illustrate the importance of recognizing the drivers of, and obstacles to, mobile marketing acceptance. These factors included the likelihood of providing information, likelihood of accessing content, likelihood of sharing content, level of risk acceptance, and level of personal attachment to one’s mobile phone. They used SMS text messages to send the payment to the vending machines. In 1997, the first mobile phone based banking service was also launched in Finland using SMS. Mobile Commerce also known as mCommerce allows consumers the ability to conduct commerce, using a mobile device e.g. a mobile handset (cell phone), PDA, smartphone and other emerging mobile equipment.
