Essay #1 Equality stated “The only thing that can hold a man back is another man.” In my opinion I disagree with this statement. I disagree with this statement because I believe one’s success is depending on one’s self. I say this because I feel as if in order for someone to hold you down; you have to give them permission to do so. I also believe your self-confidence plays a big part as well. Also there’s motivation in it with one’s self as well. All of these play a big part in Equalities’ success. The reason I chose these three are because no one can hold you down but yourself. My family has taught me all my life never to give up. They told me to always let my haters be my motivators. So when equality got upset with them for not even giving his idea a chance, he was being degraded. He let them get him out of his character in which I wouldn’t have let happen. But since this was in the collectivist time he didn’t know any of this. When they told Equality he couldn’t be a scholar, they were aiming at his self-confidence. By them trying to lower his self-confidence that plays a big part in holding him back. It took Equality to realize his ability. It took him to believe in one’s self. When he rebelled against them he took back their permission to hold him down or per say ‘back”. So the level of authensity they went to really didn’t matter in the end. I simply say that one’s motivation plays a huge part as well. Self-motivation is how you believe in yourself. When someone tries to hold me back or down it makes me work harder. It’s makes me push myself harder. Those trying to hold me down help me to help myself. Just to show that person it didn’t work. So by equality taking back their permission, believing in his self-confidence, and motivating himself is what made him excel. Which proves “the only thing that can hold a man back is another man” is now rendered a false statement?

This states that everybody has an equal opportunity, but in reality do we? Personally agreeing with his concept, people deserve what they work for in life but not quite sure if that is rational. Everyone starts life with some sort of blessing and who’s to say one deserves more than another. In today’s world, we morally accept the fact that everybody is created equal. As Arora explains, “they believe that we are the authors of our own destiny and whoever wins the race is morally deserving of the awards they obtain from the market – and its flip side, that we morally deserve our failure too, and its consequences” (Arora 88). What Arora is explaining is that from birth we all start out equally, but as time progresses and we become independent, we have to fight for our achievements and live with our failures in order to become successful. Although this statement is true however, everyone starts the same but from different starting points. As Arora also states, “So while the racetrack may look nice and shiny, the runners don’t begin at the same starting point.” So we may all be on the same track of life and looking for that finish line, even though we may have started from different places. For example, there is a reason why janitors who work for very low wages are not doctors or lawyers. They did not have the same opportunity or time to go to school and earn the degree required to…

In Anthem, Ayn Rand reveals the idea that words can give someone the freedom to choose their own path. Equality, after having suffered from being forced to conform and hide his true self from the oppressive eyes of the society, is now relieved to finally have the missing pieces to his knowledge. He exclaims, “Many words have been granted me, and some are wise, and some are false, but only three are holy: “I will it!” (Rand 94). When Equality discovers the “Unspeakable Word,” he no longer feels restricted to the ties that bind him to the society, despite already having left. He now feels liberated and has finally completed his quest to truly embrace his own individuality. Equality knows that his knowledge of these words will lead him on…

Lao Tzu once said, “He who gains victory over other men is strong, but he who gains a victory over himself is all powerful.” I believe this means that the most powerful person is one who understands and has control over themselves. Richard Wright, in his autobiography Black Boy, and the titular character of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby both lend themselves in portraying the truth of this quote.…

Living in a collective society where you can't express yourself or be independent is hard to imagine. In Anthem, the collective society they live in forbids individuality like thoughts, feelings, words, and actions. It says “We must strive to be like all our brother men, for all men must be alike.(17)” In Anthem, when Equality stumbles upon a chance to detach himself from the collective society, he makes the most of it. I think Equality’s primary motivation was to make something for himself and detach himself from his collective society he lives in. I think that it was good for him to be motivated this way, and I think that in our world today if everyone were motivated this way that life would be better.…

    The Meaning of Discretion

The cons of equality also extend to class structure in our society. In other nations around the world many times people in the upper class, tend to get leniency and bias in the court system. This leads to resentment by the other social classes and therefore weakens the cohesiveness of the society. The concept of total equality eliminates this aspect, and thereby focuses on each individual fairly. This means that it doesn’t matter who you are or what your job is; it only matters what crime you committed and what were the circumstances of it. This marks…
