If I were to obtain $1,000,000 in funding for the improvement of Elliot Lake, and to help make a better life for its inhabitants, I would increase the amount of affordable housing available in Elliot Lake, and also modernize and enlarge the Oaks Centre, which houses five different community service programs.

Paying these high rents, and the rising cost of hydro, leaves little to nothing for other necessities, and these people definitely have nothing left over to spend on recreational activities.
This is why I would use a portion of the funds to purchase the old College Boreal campus, and one of our older shopping complexes and convert them into residential units, geared for people on a fixed income. There is a large area in the shopping complex which could be converted into a fitness center. Membership fees to this facility would be on a sliding scale based on monthly income, thus enabling anybody to 'join a gym' should they wish to do so.
Ironically, until last year, the Ruben Ulli Ute Recreation Center, our local swimming pool(with whirlpool and saunas) and fitness center, had this type of program in place. Unfortunately, city council saw this type of program as too costly to the tax payers, and it was …show more content…
Joseph's General Hospital, and it offers both withdrawal management (detox) services, and Residential treatment services; which are offered through the Camillus Centre. The Camillus Centre is a 40 bed co-ed facility, which offers chemical dependency programs for both the individual, as well as family and co-dependency programs.
Aside from the addictions programs, the Oaks Centre also houses the Algoma Community Care Access Centre ( a one stop place to access in home health care services as well as placement in long-term care facilities), Counseling Centre of East Algoma (offering a wide variety of individual and group counseling services), and Algoma Family Services, who became homeless after their building was deemed structurally unsound, following a mandatory inspection in the wake of the partial collapse of the Algo Centre Mall roof, last June.
My plan for Phase 2 of this project is to expand on the existing building, by adding more beds to enable a greater number of people to access addictions treatment services. The new centre would also have a lodge on-site for Native and non-Native clients who wished to partake in Native spiritual traditions; and a 'Zen' meditation area, for deep contemplation, or just to go and relax. I would also add a swimming pool and exercise/weight room which clients could access while in treatment, as part of their journey towards a healthier
