Elie Wiesel Research Paper
Elie has changed as a result of his imprisonment. He has changed emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Elie’s emotional state has changed during his imprisonment because before the he was sent to imprisonment, he was very innocent. When Moishe the Beadle came back to the town after being taken by the Nazis and shot in the leg, Elie did not believe his story. During Elie’s imprisonment, he was almost living Moishe’s story. Elie’s emotional state started to change when he got to his first labor camp. He saw what really happened at these “labor camps”. He saw all the dead bodies being burned and people being beaten for no reason. Then he believed Moishe’s story. He was completey striped of his innocence at the death camps. Once he was taken onto the trains, they could only eat what they brought. After they got off the trains and into the camps, they only had one to two small meals a day which consisted of soup and a small piece of bread. Then the german officers would work them almost to death everyday. (Wiesel)
Overall, Elie has changed a lot. He has lost a lot of spiritual beliefs. He has seen hundreds of deaths. That changed the way he sees the world now. He is also very light and not getting enough nutrition. These changes affect his overall character because now he is not the person that some people used to know. He has moved a lot more towards self preservation and away from family commitment. The long term effects of these changes will be that he might not study religion at all if he gets out. He will never be 13 year old Elie who thought that the world was full of peace.
