Electronic Fan
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The initial manufacturing of electric fans originated from India approximately in the year 1921. This growing industry entails the assembling and completion of various fans, such as ceiling fan, table fans, wall fans, pedestal fans, exhaust fans among many other types, with ceiling fans dominating the market demand. The challenge within the industry is unfortunately decreasing. As the peak season of production arises there is a shortage in the component supply (Sridharan, 2009). In efforts to recertify this growing concern a short term forecast and demand pattern analysis was completed by Ravi Kumar upon the requested of the local fan manufacturers association (Sridharan, 2009). Considering all known factors, unknown factors in conjunction with the testing of three forecasting methods to determine the smallest error; the regression analysis was most feasible. After a thorough evaluation of the case, it is conclusive that the regression analysis predicts a long term increase in demand; therefore an investment to increase production should be implemented to meet this demand. BACKGROUND As stated earlier, the manufacturing of electric fan started in India during the 1920’s. The booming growth in the fan industry was not until after India’s independence on 15 Aug 1947 (Shah, 2012). The popular company known as Orient Fans, is the largest manufacture and one the largest brands in India, dating back as far as the 1940’s (Orientfans, 1997). Like any developing industry,, manufacturing competitors were emerging across the country from both a large and small scale units. Popular names such as: Jay Engineering Works started in the 1950’s, Khaitan, Polar, Crompton Greaves, Bajaj among many others (Sridharan, 2009).. As the industry expounded Kolkata was the major production centre during the fifties however by the nineties Hyderabad was the largest ceiling fan manufacture centre in the country although Jay Engineering Work, Kolkata

The market for electric fans is affected by the changing economy. Riordan’s major customers will be affected and should be analyzed to determine how the economy will affect the future of Riordan (Apollo Group, 2004). A time series analysis should be used, based on the history of the last three years to predict the future production. Since, the demand is not growing or declining rapidly a moving average can be used by using an average of the previous years’ demand, giving each year equal value (Chase, Jacobs, & Aquilano, 2006).…

Strategic capacity planning starts with better use of resources by reducing trade deficit, a factor that continues to reduce estimates for economic growth. The electric motors used in the fans are completely assembled units. Regardless of the contracts it receives for yearly quantities of bottles that each customer orders, the customers actually provide release orders for smaller quantities throughout the year against the yearly totals. These release orders are received at random since each customer's requirement for bottles varies as a function of the variability of the sales of the customer's final products that use the bottles.…

A seasonal factor is the amount of correction needed in a time series to adjust for the season of the year, (Chase, Jacobs, & Aquilano, 2006). Since the product is fans, it is acceptable to assume that demand for the product will increase seasonal by region. Hotter temperatures will warrant higher demand for the product and an increase in the sellable inventory and production speed. Cooler temperatures will create less demand and require less inventory and decreased production. As the world moves into green technology, Riordan will also be required to re-develop their product to be more energy efficient and therefore more desirable to the consumers. Riordan will use multiplicative seasonal variation to accurately forecast the need for the fans during seasonal transitions. In this case, the forecast will equal trend times seasonal…
