INTRODUCTION
Elder abuse can be defined as the infliction of injury by a care giver in an unreasonable manner; may involve intimidation, confinement or punishment that results in mental anguish/mental illness, physical pain/harm. Physical abuse includes striking an elder with objects, slapping him/her, pushing him/her and hitting him/her. Use of physical restraints and chemical restraints on a care giver has also been classified as abuse.? Rape, sexual abuse and non-consensual sexual involvement with an elder in a nursing home setting are regarded as elder abuse. Psychological abuse using insults is also regarded as abuse. Studies also reveal that individuals of the female gender are highly probable to be victims of elder abuse. Non-white ethnic descent and single status of the elders are the other demographic factors that contribute to the likelihood of an individual being a victim of elder abuse.? According to a study done in 2014 by United State's National Center on Elder Abuse, there is estimation that close to 1.5 million of Americans of the ages of 65 years and above have had abuse perpetrated on them. The prevalence rate of abuse in the elders ranges between 2 -10%. A study done in 2014 revealed that out of all the elderly respondents, 5.2% of them reported financial exploitation, 4.6% of them reported emotional abuse, 5.1% of them reported neglect and 1.6% of them reported physical abuse. A study done by (Laumann et al., 2008) revealed that 9% of the respondents revealed incidences of verbal abuse, 3.5% of the respondents reported cases of financial abuse and 0.2% of the respondents revealed cases of physical

    Elder abuse is considered an assaultive offense when the allegations involve neglectful behavior towards an elder. When abuse is based solely on neglect, or omission, these offenses result in felony charges on the lower end; this results in a jail sentence of up to three years. When elder abuse is intentional, abusers are given mid-range felony charges which can result in up to a twenty year jail sentence. If an individual is accused of elder abuse, but possesses a license that permits them to care for other human beings, their license will be revoked. Lastly, if the abuser is promised a gift from the victim, such as an inheritance, it will no longer be available to them.
