CHAPTER ONE

1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Electronics has so much improved to the extent of applying its use to the health sector. In Africa there has been a very high infection rate of the malaria parasite due to the breeding environment conducive for its reproduction available in almost in all regions.About 3.3 billion people half of the world 's population are at risk of malaria. In 2010, there were about 219 million malaria cases (with an uncertainty range of 154 million to 289 million) and an estimated 660 000 malaria deaths (with an uncertainty range of 490 000 to 836 000). Increased prevention and control measures have led to a reduction in malaria mortality rates by more than 25% globally since 2000 and by 33% in the WHO African Region. (http://www.who.int/features/factfiles/malaria/en/, Retrieved: 2/17/2014).

People living in the poorest countries are the most vulnerable to malaria. In 2010, 90% of all malaria deaths occurred in the WHO African Region, mostly among children under five years of age. (http://www.who.int/features/factfiles/malaria/en/, Retrieved on: 2/17/2014). Malaria affects more than 250 million people and causes more than a million deaths each year (WHO 2005). One important control strategy against this and other mosquito-borne diseases is control, which aims to reduce human-mosquito contact. Different control measures are used routinely against mosquitoes and their larvae, including chemical (eg insecticide), biological (eglarvivorous fish or pathogenic fungi), environmental (e.g. land filling or drainage), and personal protection (e.g. Mosquito repellents formulated as pills, coils, ointments, lotions, and sprays; and insecticide-treated or untreated bed nets) (malaria review.pdf by Enayati A, Hemingway J, Garner P,2010)
Electronic mosquito repellents (EMRs) are marketed in response to a huge demand from the public for convenient, safe, and effective antimosquito products. Female Anopheles

Currently before the Genericville city council is a proposed pesticide application program to reduce the mosquito population. The current pesticide of choice for this is Malathion. While there are many different viewpoints on the effects of the pesticide Malathion, it is my decision as a city council member to vote for the usage of Malathion as part of the pesticide application program. Included in my vote is the condition that extensive educational efforts are given to the public, notice of when and where the pesticide will be applied, and its potential risk and hazards be given to the citizens of Genericville.…

The transmission of malaria can be reduced by preventing the bites of the female Anopheles mosquito by using mosquito nets and insect repellents. The spread of the population of mosquitoes, especially of that of the female Anopheles mosquitoes, can be drastically reduced and brought under control by spraying insecticides inside the houses and especially near the drainage systems, where the stagnant water provides an excellent breeding grounds where the female Anopheles mosquitoes lay their eggs. Malaria is a vector-borne disease. It is a contagious disease and is widespread in the tropical and subtropical regions. Currently, no vaccine is available for the treatment of malaria.…

    On Ddt Legalization

So this case is a throw back from environment year… I hate repeat cases -_- Anyways, the basic idea of the case is to legalize DDT. DDT is a chemical mosquito repellent that is dumped in nations in order to stop malaria. DDT was banned by the UN under the Stockholm convention, and signed onto by nearly every nation. Now the basic idea of the case is that DDT is the most effective way to fight malaria, however we cant use it because of the ban. I believe the case can be attacked straight up, without a counterplan, but include multiple cards for support of a CP if you want to go that route. Here is the run down of what arguments I would run…. A. Topicality (Not fully included in brief) , it can be hard to sell, but run just to annoy the aff team into dropping their untopical case. B. Inherency, DDT is currently allowed in developing countries…

Although Malaria is worldwide it is particularly devastating in Africa. It is at the point where there are 10 new cases of malaria every second.[1] Every 60 seconds, a child in Africa dies from a malaria infection that can be prevented and treated.[2] Malaria has been brought under control in Asia, Europe, and the Americas but yet Africa is still struggling. With the lack of a health system, poverty and poor environment conditions malaria infections have been on the rise. The Malaria infections can be prevented by spraying insecticides indoors or by sleeping under long-lasting insecticide-treated bed nets. These simple nets can save lives; it can reduce malaria transmissions by 90 percent. [3]But factors make it difficult to provide nets to this region. It can be said that looking deep into the wrinkles of an elderly man or woman, a story can be uncovered. But in Africa, people are lucky to make it to such an age; every 30 seconds a child dies of malaria ("Fact sheet n°94," 2010). The problems don’t stop there. The world is affected by the many impacts of such a disease. As one of the number one killers, malaria has caught the attention of many organizations. Many other countries, mostly those that have a subtropical climate or that are islands, have overcame and reduced the number of cases a year; Africa and many other third world countries are still suffering (Gallup, & Sachs, 2001). The reason why—poverty and lack of education. Malaria is causing further economic turmoil, but at the same time uniting organizations to help reduce the loss of the human race to malaria.…
