The evolution of IT in healthcare and the passage of Acts such as HITECH Act, HIPAA Act etc. have made healthcare providers to document and database their patient information in an appropriate format that can be shared across hospitals, medical professionals and specialists at remote locations. Old legacy systems were just an extension of word processing software and lacked the flexibility, compatibility and security to be used across systems and in a networked atmosphere. This has necessitated organizations providing healthcare services to implement the modern EHR systems in their network. For the EHR data migration to be successful, the EHR data conversion process should be planned from the ground up. The data migration can be from paper based health records or old EMR systems or a combination of both.
