effects of power
Attaining power in works of literature can be a very effective way to bring a character to life. Once a character gains power, the reader sees their true personality, whether that is a good or evil personality. Power can bring people together and provide happiness or destroy a person and cause chaos. Many works of literature contain characters that are affected by power. Some characters are affected for the better while others are destroyed by the effects of power. The destructive effects of power are evident through characters in Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Xanadu by Audrey Thomas, and Macbeth by William Shakespeare. The first effect of power on characters was made evident in the novel Lord of the Flies by William Golding. One character who was affected by power was Roger. His power was made evident when Golding wrote: High overhead, Roger, with a sense of delirious abandonment, leaned all his weight on the lever. Ralph heard the great rock long before he saw it. He was aware of a jolt in the earth that came to him through the soles of his feet, and the breaking sound of stones at the top of the cliff. Then the monstrous red thing bounded across the neck and he flung himself fat while the tribe shrieked. The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee. (Golding 200)
Roger wanted everyone on the island to know that he did have power. Roger chose to demonstrate this power by killing Piggy. Roger’s desire for power made him kill an innocent person who was always trying to help out. The next character who was affected by power was Jack. Jack showed his power when he led his tribe to hunt. Jack said, “‘I cut the pig’s throat,’ said Jack, proudly… ‘We had to have them in the hunt,’ he said, ‘or they wouldn’t have been enough for a ring’” (Golding 73). Jack used the power he had over the tribe to hunt. He made the tribe believe he had more authority than Ralph. Because the tribe did everything Jack said, the tribe followed him on the hunt

Power can change people in a way that is incomprehensible either for good or for evil. Power can make one so greedy that someone will do anything for it and won’t let anyone, or thing stand in their way. Macbeth by William Shakespeare portrays both the positive and negative uses on Power through the main characters. Macbeth’s greed of power allowed him to exercise abuse and ultimately he was corrupted and destroyed by power. Lady Macbeth used power in a positive way but her ultimate goal was domination of the Crown. Shakespeare uses dialogue and symbolism to allow his readers to engage with his mood and therefore the concepts of power.…

The character Jack in Lord of the Flies had been civil and unable to kill a pig, “because of the enormity of the knife descending and cutting into living flesh; because of the unbearable blood,” however, later on in the story, Jack had brutally murdered a sow without a second thought. Also unfazed by the death of Piggy, he had ordered his tribe to hunt down Ralph to kill him. The character Roger also faces a development of his savage manner depicted when “[he] stooped, picked up a stone, aimed and threw it at Henry- threw it to miss.” The intent to miss implied how he still felt the consequences of the law and order back home if he were to hit Henry. Later on, when Piggy had confronted Jack’s tribe about the stolen fire and glasses, Roger pulled a lever, knowing a large rock were to roll down, to kill Piggy. The size of the rocks used in Roger’s attack could represent his development of savageness as well. When he had thrown to miss, he used a small stone, but when he killed Piggy, he used a giant rock. The development of their savageness was triggered by the loss of…

“Steep slope up to the shattered rocks that crowned the bastion." The description of “Castle Rock” shows how different it is from Ralph’s setting. It is distinguishably set apart from the main island and is very inaccessible with very minimal fresh water. His preference shows that he wants to be the person that controls and overlooks the island. At the Castle Rock, Jack reaches a point of extreme savagery by killing Piggy and the conch, a strong symbolism of democracy. In addition, he plans to kill anyone who doesn’t obey his orders. It is fair to say that Jack is acting like Hitler committing extermination of Jews which he considers “dangerous to his…

Power is presented through characters by using a long description of what the character is like, describing their appearance, positive points and negative points. The power of the character is presented by demonstrating their dominance or submissiveness over another character through their actions, speech and the way they behave around them, and if they change their behaviour around other people, for example Curley acts as if he’s the best in the world at everything around Lennie because he tries to beat him up but he doesn’t act that way towards Slim, who is more dominant and powerful than him in terms of dominance, but not in terms of ranch hierarchy.…

The second Ralph was elected as chief, tension between he and Jack emerged. Ralph temporarily saved himself by giving Jack a prominent role, leader of the hunters. This made Jack seem more important, he was given power by this key role. As Jack’s hunting skills increased he began to slay more pigs and the other members of the tribe looked up to him. He soon became a savage who tortured animals instead of killing them just for survival. The other children were attracted by this, and joined the savage group. Ralph struggled to maintain power because Jack only wanted to have fun and kill, while he wanted to have rules and order so they could be saved.…

It was also said that the tribes provided some setup for the murder. One of the boys and leader of the more savage tribe, Jack, made threats of killing those who entered his “castle” and even set a trap. When Roger found, two of the boys, Ralph and Piggy, entering his “castle”, he released a boulder killing Piggy. In a later interview, Roger added that he did this not solely because of Jack's orders, but mostly because he felt that on the island, there would no consequences for his actions. In this way, the idea of tribes contributed to the…

In the play "Macbeth" and the novel Lord of the Flies, the prospect of power and the corruptive nature that it has on man affects his relationship to power. Power is defined as, "the ability or capacity to exercise control; authority." This authority ultimately leads to the unveiling of the characters' true temperament. In Shakespeare's "Macbeth" and William Golding's, Lord of the Flies, Macbeth and Jack are used to portray the distressing truth that power corrupts all those who seek it. In "Macbeth", Macbeth's tragic flaw of ambition, as well as moral weakness and selective perception, are gradually revealed through his steady ascension to power and subsequent descent into madness and paranoia. In Lord of the Flies, Jack's subordinate position creates unrest on the island and leads to a disruption in the balance of power. Power and the lack of it, causes the two men to initiate unjust and autocratic administrations that displace the natural order.…

Power has the tendency to cause humanity to become addicted to it. When under its influence, it can cause a person to lose sight of the consequences of their actions, and even lose their ability to feel empathy. This is the case in Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake, Crakes character loses his touch with humanity when he creates his elite race. He is blinded by what he believes is the greater good and it is thus that causes the downfall of the entire human race.…
