Effect of Unethical Behavior in Accounting When describing accounting, it can be defined, as a type of method used to provide information with regards to the financial position of a company or an organization. The information provided to investors is imperative because it provides the investor with valuable information that can lead to their determination as to whether they should decide to invest or not to invest in a specific organization. Consequently, because of unethical practices and behaviors in accounting it is unusual to find such unethical behaviors. Some unethical practices in accounting that can be found would be to have misleading financial analysis for personal gain, exaggeration of revenue, and providing erroneous information pertaining to the company’s expenses and liabilities, misuse of funds, or exaggerating the value of corporate assets. In addition, to these unethical behavior there are other unethical practices like insider trading, bribery, securities fraud, and manipulation of the financial markets.
In the late 1990’s and early 2000’s both publicly traded companies, WorldCom and Enron added weighted truth to the credibility of accounting and business ethics. Both Companies were involved in scandals that engaged in misrepresentation in financial statements and fraud. Enron was one of the world’s leading American energy company’s and in October 2001 Enron Corporation filed bankruptcy, this was due to the unethical behavior that Enron executives had practice. Enron had used ambiguous accounting methods. They provided false financial reports to conceal the billions of dollars in debt they acquired from unsuccessful business projects. The fraudulent actions taken by the Enron executives deceived the board of directors, shareholders, who lost billions when the stock prices dropped, and the audit committee of Arthur Andersen who they had overlook the financial concerns of the company; this cause the collapse of Arthur Andersen

This company is a perfect example on how unethical behavior of a few people can affect millions of individuals. This also affected these individuals for many years after. This lead the investors to invest in something that was not there and something that was not true. All investors are relying on a company to have accurate financial information. This is how investors can see management and the resources of the company. Then with this information the investors will make a decision weather or not to invest in the company. I feel that in today's industry its a lot more common to find unethical managers in there positions. These managers are the type that will effect millions of individuals, and can harm allot of peoples finances. The manger of Enron bad the bad unethical decision to give false information on the income statement figures. Due to this unethical decision it turned into a multi-billion dollar disaster. Once this step was made to bring in new investors they could back track and fix what they did. This decision is what led the collapse of Enron and the loss of billions of dollars for investors. IN this company there were managers that made unethical decision and also accountants. If I were to work for this company as an accountant I think that I would have resigned from the company but also let them know what was going on. I…

    Some investors that are misled lost chunk if not all of their investments. The public, investors, employees, pension holders and politicians were so outraged and wanted to why Enron's failings were not spotted earlier. Enron did not do these all alone, they have accomplice in the name of another giant accounting/auditing company called Arthur Andersen where they helped the firm overlooked significant debts that are not the Enron’s financial statement.     Corporate ethical breaches in recent times have raised questions about whether the current business and regulatory environment is conducive to ethical behavior. Cases leading to regulatory changes through scandalous financial reporting include Enron, Worldcom, Tyco, HealthSouth and others (Enofe, 2010, p.54).
