Education Is the Problem, Not the Solution

Thaddeus McCarthy in his article “Education Is the Problem, Not the Solution” published on www.huffingtonpost.com on 09/10/2014 challenged the notion of traditional education as the solution for poverty. Contrary to the common idea instilled for generations that the solution to end poverty is the education, he rather claimed that it’s actually the root of the problem; the reason why poverty is endless.
McCarthy brought forth a few issues in relating to the traditional education system practiced worldwide that he believes create the problem. One of the aspects he mentioned is on the effectiveness of private schools; where he argued these schools to be entirely hopeless. He claimed that what one will get out of private school is not any better than what one gets out of public school, but on the contrary, what one gets out of the latter is more than of the former in terms of interaction with wider group of peers coming from different demographics. For example, he proposed that the best way to educate the generation in the field of business, especially in marketing, is by encouraging the simple idea of engaging directly in entrepreneurial activities; such as setting up one’s own lemonade stand for example, instead of simply enrolling in a business program and be done with it. By setting up one’s own business, one will get first-hand experience in budgeting and revenue generation, profits and loses, and forced to be creative in assessing the strategies, as compared to having them in curriculum but the students are never truly exposed to experiencing and handling the ups and downs of business
